While Marvel fans are still holding their breath to find out if Chris Hemsworth will return to his role as the God of Thunder in another Taika Waititi-helmed Thor feature, Star Wars fans are in for a sigh of relief. According to The Hot Mic’s Jeff Sneider (via The Bespin Bulletin), despite rumors that audiences will never get to see Waititi’s vision behind a galaxy far, far away, the podcast host revealed that this couldn’t be further from the truth as a script has already been completed.

Entertainment insider Jeff Sneider says that Taika Waititi has already completed drafts of his slated Star Wars film.

“It’s not dead,” Sneider said during a recent installment of the entertainment-based podcast, “Taika [Waititi] has turned in multiple drafts at this point and other writers as well have touched it. Taika owes them [Lucasfilm] another draft after the [WGA] strike is over.”

Like many other productions in Hollywood, it would seem that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars slowdown is simply coming from the ongoing writers’ strike which has pumped the brakes on several highly-anticipated productions. Still, Waititi didn’t do himself any favors and essentially sent the rumor mill into full churn when he made a joke at the recent TIFF Tribute Awards.

While they’ve mixed in comedy with high-flying action sequences, it’s safe to presume that Taika Waititi’s feature will be even more full of sarcastic and silly characters.

Taking to the stage as one of the speakers honoring filmmaker Shawn Levy (Free Guy, Deadpool 3), Waititi jested that he was holding onto “hope” that Levy would complete his script for a Star Wars film “unlike me.”

For the Star Wars fandom, time has been slowly passing since the arrival of J.J. Abrams’ 2019 film, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which was the final feature-length production to come from the George Lucas-created universe.

When Taika Waititi was initially announced to be directing and co-writing a new Star Wars flick back in May of 2020, the release date was set for late 2023. But, as we know, there is certainly no Star Wars movie zooming into theaters this year.

What Is Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie About?

While no plot details for Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film have been revealed, it’s been teased that audiences can expect a handful of new vibrant locations and fresh faces joining the family. With so many stories coming from the franchise in recent years via Disney+ shows, there’s a lot of extra lore for the film’s writers to dive into. However, at the same time, with all of the lore also comes the expectation that any follow-up movie will stay true to its origins while also adding personal touches.

The past few installments of Star Wars films have seen the aforementioned J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson shape the stories of characters including Rey (Daisy Ridley), Ben Solo/Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), and Finn (John Boyega) as well as put legacy characters like Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to rest.

While they’ve mixed in comedy with high-flying action sequences, it’s safe to presume that Taika Waititi’s feature will be even more full of sarcastic and silly characters.

Known for critically acclaimed films including Jojo Rabbit, Taika Waititi managed to bring an entertaining turn-around to the Thor franchise. Having helmed fan-favorite standalone titles, Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, the New Zealand native pumped fresh air into the character. With his comedic background in other projects including What We Do in the Shadows and Our Flag Means Death, we can’t wait to see what Waititi comes up with for his venture into Star Wars.
