Sylvester Stallone might be in his 70s, but the man is showing no signs of slowing down, especially in the action genre of films. His newest offering is a superhero film called Samaritan. Stallone may have been in the superhero genre back in the 1990s when he starred in Judge Dredd, but the more traditional superhero flick appearance was until 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He portrayed Stakar Ogard aka Starhawk. Then he jumped to DC to be the voice of the fan-favorite shark god, King Shark. Now, he is set to star in a film that gives off Hancock and Unbreakable vibes. The first poster of the film has dropped, showcasing what Stallone looks like. You can see the poster below:
We can honestly say that gritty superhero movies and shows are kind of popular right now. From animated shows like Invincible to the gorier live-action style of The Boys, it seems that fans cannot get enough of turning the superhero genre on its head. That seems to be the case for Sylvester Stallone in Samaritan. This is a fantastic poster for the simple fact that the puddle of his reflection shows what the man used to look like. He is cloaked and clearly does not want to be seen by anyone. The troubled past motif is one that has been played out by many films, but it is quite good when used alongside a former superhero.
Samaritan follows Mr. Joe Smith (Sylvester Stallone), who resides in Granite City. A thirteen-year-old boy named Sam Cleary begins to befriend Mr. Smith, especially after he believes Smith to be the legendary vigilante known as the Samaritan. Samaritan was said to be dead after a battle and fire took place against his foe, Nemesis. However, with Samaritan still alive and corruption and crime going rampant in Granite City, Sam attempts to convince Mr. Smith to come out of hiding and save the city.
We understand that a lot of this film is harkening on superheroes and troubles past tropes, but we are more than excited to see what it has to offer. Sylvester Stallone has been fantastic in the contemporary superhero genre, and he can certainly carry an action film. We are not expecting this film to turn into a full-fledged franchise, but Stallone is quite good at making those sorts of things happen. Unbreakable surprisingly turned into a franchise, so it stands to reason that Samaritan could do the same.
Samaritan is set to debut on Amazon Prime Video on August 26th. Amazon Prime Video seems to be pulling in plenty of the oddball superhero shows and films, so it makes sense the company jumped at the chance to see Sylvester Stallone star in his own superhero film. Stallone will then move to his last starring role in The Expendables 4 and presumably return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He may be in his 70s, but the man is proving that he is better than ever. We can’t wait to see all his future movies.
