Sylvester Stallone Sequel Finally Happening And We Can’t Wait
Sylvester Stallone will be reprising his role as Ranger Gabriel “Gabe” Walker in Cliffhanger 2, according to Screen Daily. The upcoming sequel has secured funding from German Production fund FFF Bayern, and will begin production in the summer of 2024. Though there have been talks of a sequel as far back as 1994, it seems that the wait is finally over, and fans of the original film will get the follow-up they’ve wanted to see materialize for decades.
Sylvester Stallone’s Roles In Cliffhanger 2
Though we don’t know the entire financial situation for Cliffhanger 2, FFF Bayern has allocated over $2 million for the production, which will be a joint collaboration between Maze Pictures and Occupant Entertainment. Not only will Sylvester Stallone be starring in Cliffhanger 2, he will also taking on the role of producer. The project will be helmed by director Jean-François Richet, who has worked on films like Assault on Precinct 13, Mesrine: Killer Instinct, and Plane. Past reports indicated that Ric Roman Waugh was set to helm the highly-anticipated sequel, but as of this writing, the In the Shadows director is no longer involved.
Gabe Walker In The Sequel
Cliffhanger 2 will center on Sylvester Stallone’s Gabe Walker years after the original film took place. Now owning and operating a luxury mountain lodge in the Italian Alps, Walker lives in the Dolomites, and has a daughter. But when he’s kidnapped while taking a client on a weekend trip, his daughter is tasked with using the climbing skills and instincts she picked up from her father to embark on a life-or-death rescue mission. Sylvester Stallone is obviously receiving top billing for Cliffhanger 2, but as of this writing, no other official casting announcement has been made. So it will be interesting to find out who will be cast as his daughter, or if anybody else from Cliffhanger will be reprising their roles in this new adventure.
1993’s Cliffhanger
If Cliffhanger 2 proves to be a successful spiritual predecessor to its 1993 counterpart, then it’s safe to say that we’re going to have another action-packed thriller to add to Sylvester Stallone’s extensive filmography. But a sequel this late in the game could pose some challenges for Sylvester Stallone and co. The original Cliffhanger was as massive commercial success upon its 1993 theatrical release, earning $255 million against its reported budget of $70 million. When you consider Cliffhanger’s legacy (as recently discussed on the Genre Vision podcast), it’s safe to say that expectations will be high for Cliffhanger 2.
A Chance To Outshine The Original
Known for its brilliant cinematography and stunt coordination, Cliffhanger has been celebrated by avid action movie fans for the last 30 years. Some critics have criticized the film for having a contrived plot, but have praised the film for its stunning visuals and state-of-the-art stunt work that was unheard of at the time.
Though this is a common criticism that many Sylvester Stallone action movies from that era have received, Cliffhanger 2 has the potential to not only live up to its predecessor but possibly surpass it in scope of storytelling.
When Does Cliffhanger 2 Release?
Cliffhanger 2 doesn’t have a set release date, and is currently in the pre-production phases. Sources indicate that we can expect the new Sylvester Stallone film to have a 2025 premiere. We’ll have to wait a little longer for further developments, but we’ll be thrust into the mountains for a new action-packed survival story before we know it.
