Sylvester Stallone has played all kinds of action heroes over the years, though they typically have some heavy weaponry and a penchant for using a ton of bullets. For his next role though he’s going to get a very different look, voicing an unlikely hero on the big screen. That’s when he takes on the role of King Shark in The Suicide Squad. While the movie is still a few weeks off, Stallone’s King Shark for a special trailer for Shark Week.
The special trailer was posted from The Suicide Squad’s official Twitter account with the #SharkWeek hashtag for good measure. It features Sylvester Stallone voicing the monosyllabic and very confident King Shark who looks like he’s very powerful and also very hungry for human flesh. It looks like it will be a constant struggle during the movie to keep his teeth off of those around him as they complete their next mission. The trailer offers some scenes we’ve seen before for The Suicide Squad but does have Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller giving a little background on the character. She lets on that Nanaue is a descendant of an ancient shark god and that he likes chomping on people now as part of his diet. Watching some of the other characters walk around and having to interact with this ridiculous-looking creature who has tons of hubris and very little in the way of brains looks like just one of the hilarious aspects of this film. And from these early looks, Sylvester Stallone was just the right guy to voice the character.
Sylvester Stallone is joining a stacked cast for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, a reboot of the David Ayers version from a few years ago. Though some of the original characters are back, this one might end up retconning some of the events of that film. It very much looks like a reset for the franchise. From early looks, much like this Shark Week trailer, the flick plays much more into the hilarious and sublime nature of this group. Leaning into some very silly circumstances. They might even be fighting off a massive starfish when it’s all said and done.
Along with Sylvester Stallone, Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn from the original, and Joel Kinnaman is back as Rick Flag as well. But they will be joined by franchise newcomers Idris Elba as Bloodsport and John Cena as Peacemaker to round out the featured cast. But there are going to be plenty of others like David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, and Nathan Fillion as T.D.K.
We will finally get to see Sylvester Stallone voicing the King Shark role when The Suicide Squad debuts on August 5th in the United States. It will be in theaters, but also streaming on HBO Max as well. From the early looks of it, the franchise has been infused with new energy and humor. It’s a much-needed update from the original.
