If you’re a fan of the action, carnage, and star power from The Expendables franchise, it sounds like you’re going to get a lot more of everything. In a recent interview with PopCulture, Dolph Lundgren revealed that Sylvester Stallone is doubling up the budget for the next film in the series, which is… a whole lot of money.
Taking a look at the budget numbers, the first film in the series The Expendables, started with a fairly significant budget of $80 million. While that’s an incredible amount of money, it seemed like a pretty safe bet for the studios with the high-octane action and the cast of new and classic action stars that Sylvester Stallone put together. The success of The Expendables gave The Expendables 2 an even bigger budget of $100 million. The Expendables 3 would go on to have a similar budget, which means The Expendables 4 is set to have a budget in the ballpark of a whopping $200 million. If Dolph Lundgren’s guess is accurate, this would put The Expendables 4 in the top 50 most expensive films of all time, sharing the same budget as films like Spider-Man 2, F9, Titanic, Tenet, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and more.
In addition to the gigantic budget, The Expendables 4 is also set to be a return to form for the franchise. Although The Expendables 3 had name recognition, it performed the worst out of all the films. It still turned a tidy profit, but the PG-13 rating and the drop in quality led to something that wasn’t up to fan expectations. Expendables 4 returns to an R rating, so fans should get the blood and violence they’ve come to expect. The fourth entry will star series standbys like Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Randy Couture, and Dolph Lundgren. Newcomers to the franchise include Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Andy Garcia, Megan Fox, and 50 Cent.
While plot details for Sylvester Stallone and company’s fourth outing are being kept under wraps, the presence of Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais should mean that we get some high-quality martial arts action. Scott Waugh handles director duties. You may also know him from his directing efforts on Act of Valor and Need for Speed. As mentioned, we also know that they’re definitely going to keep the R rating. Though this cuts down on the people who will be able to check it out in theatres, the box office numbers clearly show that they should stick to their niche and focus on pleasing the fans. It seems like fans will get what they want this time around.
The Expendables 4 is currently in post-production, with the release date likely landing sometime in 2022. In the meantime, you can catch another Sylvester Stallone movie, Samaritan in August, in which he plays a superhero who reappears after the world thought he went missing. If you can’t wait until Summer for a new Sly Stallone movie, you can hear him in his latest role as the voice of King Shark in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
