Sylvester Stallone Is Coming Back For Cliffhanger Reboot
Sylvester Stallone reprises the role of Gabe Walker for a Cliffhanger reboot, though not as the lead hero this time.
It only took 30 years, but the action thriller Cliffhanger is finally getting rebooted, and Sylvester Stallone is coming back for it. While the Rocky star will reprise his role of Gabe Walker, there will be a different (presumably younger) lead role for the new film, according to Variety. The reboot of Cliffhanger will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who is known for action-packed Gerard Butler films like Angel Has Fallen and Greenland.
The original Cliffhanger movie came out in 1993, and it starred Sylvester Stallone alongside the talented John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, and Janine Turner. The film follows Sylvester Stallone’s character, Park Ranger Gabe Walker, who initially tries to rescue several people from a plane crash in the Rocky Mountains. He ends up getting caught in the middle of a sketchy heist situation when the crash victims turn out to be a gang of thieves who need help finding their $100 million in the mountain wilderness.
The film was a huge success that gained grossed $255 million worldwide, helping to revive Sylvester Stallone’s career after a few recent bombs at the box office. In addition to starring in Cliffhanger, Sylvester Stallone helped write the script. For the reboot, he will help with the production along with Rocket Science and Original Film, the production company started by Fast and Furious producer Neal H. Moritz.
Director Ric Roman Waugh is excited to be on board for the reboot, especially since he watched so many of Sylvester Stallone’s action films growing up. The two have yet to work together, but we can expect plenty of exciting action from the duo. Ric Roman Waugh is known for directing action-packed films like Snitch, Felon, and the upcoming action thriller Kandahar which stars Gerard Butler.
Sylvester Stallone is also no stranger to the action film genre, with his epic recurring roles in major action film franchises like The Expendables, Rambo, Rocky, and Creed. At 76 years old, the actor is still kicking ass and taking names in new action films like the upcoming cold war spy movie Never Too Old to Die in addition to Hunter, Little America, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, which hits theaters this week.
Stallone will join Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Megan Fox in yet another The Expendables film. The plot of The Expendables 4 will follow a team of badass recruits who need to save the world (again) from an arms dealer with a huge private army. The new film is coming to theaters on September 22.
Since the new Cliffhanger reboot is in its very early stages, we aren’t entirely sure what to expect from the plot or the cast. While we do know that Sylvester Stallone will reprise his role as Gabe Walker, we aren’t sure who will take on the role of the new main character. There will surely be another villain, and possibly a heist situation, but it will be tough to fill John Lithgow’s antagonistic shoes.
Regardless of the new film’s plot, be cautious when watching it if you are afraid of heights.
