It looks like Marvel and Sony are starting to spin a bigger web for their shared Spiderverse. Sydney Sweeney, a breakout star from the HBO hit series Euphoria, is now on board to join the Madame Web film that Sony currently has in the works. Details on the film are pretty scarce at the moment, so we don’t yet know who Sydney Sweeney will be playing.

Madame Web will be following in the footsteps of other Sony films that involve Spider-Man-associated characters, but that aren’t technically a proper part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When Spidey joined the Marvel team, Sony still held the rights to the character and by extension many other Spider-Man characters. That’s why you can see Tom Hardy’s Venom, traditionally a Spider-Man baddie, running amok in New York without Tom Holland’s Peter Parker ever crossing his path. Morbius will be the next movie in this quasi-crossover universe, with Michael Keaton’s character from the first MCU Spider-Man film even making an appearance in the trailer. A movie about Kraven the Hunter is also in the works and now we have the Sydney Sweeney starring Madame Web. She’ll be joining Dakota Johnson in the movie, who will be playing the title character.

As strange as this arrangement is, it does seem to be working pretty well for Sony. Not only are they raking in some of the profits from the mega-hit Spider-Man: No Way Home, but their own movies like Venom: Let There Be Carnage are doing plenty well. Spider-Man: No Way Home is already one of the highest-grossing movies of all time and the Venom sequel pulled in just over $500 million worldwide. With results like that, no one could blame Sony for continuing their Spidey-related endeavors. It’ll be interesting to see how Sydney Sweeney’s Madame Web movie plays into all of this.

Although Sydney Sweeney is the latest addition to the Madame Web cast list, she’s not the first. Dakota Johnson is actually set to star in the movie in the lead role. While Johnson is great, the choice of Madame Web as the next Spiderverse movie is admittedly a bit of a head-scratcher. First of all, Madame Web is traditionally portrayed as an old woman, which Dakota Johnson clearly is not. Also, the character is usually a supporting presence in the comics and TV shows, not usually one to take the lead. It’ll be interesting to see what direction director S.J. Clarkson and the writing team of Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, and Kerem Sang choose to go. There is a younger character named Julia Carpenter that Madame Web gives her powers to, so maybe they’ll be going that route.

In the meantime, you can see plenty of Syndey Sweeney’s work if you have access to HBO. The aforementioned Euphoria just wrapped up Season 2, becoming one of the most popular shows on the premium cable platform. She also co-starred in HBO’s The White Lotus which was well-reviewed by critics and audiences alike. She’s also currently filming a movie called National Anthem which co-stars Eric Dane, Simon Rex, and Halsey. While Madame Web may be a little ways off, there’s plenty of great content to enjoy until then.
