Sydney Sweeney is currently enjoying plenty of popularity due to her performance on the hit HBO series, Euphoria. This performance has now led the starlet into landing herself in the Sony and Marvel universe, as she has been cast in Madame Web, in an unnamed role. Madame Web joins the ever-growing list of Marvel-based Spidey films that are not exactly canon yet in the MCU. Venom, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter are all films in that shared universe. Now that Sweeney has been cast, plenty of fans began speculating who she might be playing. The two biggest rumors at this point are Spider-Gwen or Black Cat. A piece of fan art has chosen Spider-Gwen as her upcoming role. You can see the pic below:
The Instagram user known as @venomhology has certainly done quite a great job showcasing what it would look like if Sydney Sweeney was to throw in the Spider-Gwen outfit. To give a bit of context, Gwen Stacy is the love interest of Peter Parker. While most know Mary Jane to always be the love of Parker, Stacy has also played that role for many of the comic arcs. However, Stacy has also been murdered by Green Goblin, leaving Peter to be a much more haunted character. In the more recent Spidey-based film, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, Gwen Stacy appeared as Spider-Gwen. This was the first time that she had appeared in this manner apart from the comics.
While the Spider-Man mythos might be leaning more towards introducing Miles Morales as Spider-Man first, we could be seeing a Spider-Gwen sooner rather than later. Even current Spidey actor, Tom Holland, was claiming that he would love to see this iteration of the Wall-Crawler appear in a live-action format soon. Bryce Dallas Howard played Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3 (2007), though this was far before she had been introduced as a version of Spider-Man in 2015. One this is for sure; Sydney Sweeney would be perfect casting if that is show is set to appear as in the Madame Web film. The only issue with that is the world wants to see Spider-Gwen in the MCU and the Sony Marvel universe isn’t quite canonized just yet. Something needs to give as Sony and Marvel are constantly getting in one another’s way despite their partnership on the Holland-led films.
Madame Web is just another of the supporting cast that is always involved with Spider-Man in some way. That is the case for most of the above-mentioned films. Though Venom is known to be an antagonist of Spider-Man, he has since been turned into a sort of anti-hero of sorts. That could be where the Kraven film is also taking that character. Should the Sonyverse ever decide to put together the Sinister Six, Spider-Man will have his own allies to lean on. This could be where Sydney Sweeney comes into play as either Spider-Gwen or Black Cat. Whatever happens, she already looks amazing in the costume from the above-shown fan art. Make it happen Sony.
