Sydney Sweeney Making A Romcom With Top Gun Star
Sydney Sweeney is starring in a romcom with Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell, to be directed by Will Gluck.
Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney has signed on to make an R-rated romantic comedy with Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell. According to Deadline, the movie does not yet have a title, but will be directed by Will Gluck, the filmmaker best known for the Emma Stone film Easy A and the two James Corden CGI-animated Peter Rabbit films. Details of the plot are still being kept secret by Sony Pictures, it is being rewritten by Gluck from a script by Ilana Wolpert (who wrote ten episodes of the Disney+ mockumentary series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series).
Sydney Sweeney and Sony Pictures seem to be forging a firm partnership, with the HBO star currently set to produce and star in a number of feature films with the company. Most prominently, the actress will be starring in the upcoming Spider-Man-adjacent film Madame Web alongside Dakota Johnson and Adam Scott. While Dakota Johnson has been confirmed to be playing a version of the psychic Spider-ally, Sydney Sweeney’s (and Adam Scott’s) roles have not yet been revealed.
The film is part of Sony Pictures’ ongoing attempt to build a shared universe of Marvel Comics adaptations using Spider-Man characters (but not Spider-Man himself). Currently, the franchise includes two Venom films starring Tom Hardy and Morbius starring Jared Leto, which will soon be followed by Kraven the Hunter featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular character and Madame Web. Given that the movies seem to be crossing over with Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is entirely possible we could see Sydney Sweeney in the MCU at some point as well.
In addition to Madame Web, Sydney Sweeney will be starring in a remake of the cult 1968 science fiction film Barbarella, based on a comic series by the French artist Jean-Claude Forest. Both the Jane Fonda-led movie and the original comic are known for their graphic sexuality and light-hearted tone, so it will be interesting to see if the new version keeps both. Sweeney has become a modern sex symbol for her role in the HBO series Euphoria, and Barbarella will only cement that.
Finally, Sony Pictures and Sydney Sweeney are making an adaptation of Madison Lawson’s novel The Registration, in which a young woman in a dystopian near-future finds that she has been selected for a legally approved assassination by an unknown party.
Sydney Sweeney will also reprise the role of troubled teen Cassie Howard in Euphoria season 3, which does not yet have a release date. The acclaimed and controversial series has netted Sweeney a Primetime Emmy nomination, as did her role in the first season of Mike White’s anthology series The White Lotus.
Along with her many acting jobs, Sydney Sweeney has become one of the world’s premiere models and the face of many high-end fashion houses and cosmetic brands. Basically, if you are into almost any genre of film or television or beauty products or couture fashion, you’re going to be seeing a lot of Sydney Sweeney.
