Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney just landed a big role in an upcoming political drama. She’ll be playing the lead role in a movie about Reality Winner, a former American intelligence specialist that blew the whistle on Russian interference in US elections back in 2016. Sweeney will be playing Winner in the movie directed by Tina Satter.

Tina Satter is also co-writing the screenplay with James Paul Dallas, which is adapted from Satter’s critically acclaimed play Is This A Room. The play ran the Broadway circuit last fall. This will be Satter’s debut feature. This will be a highly intriguing role for Syndny Sweeney to take on. As mentioned, Reality Winner is a former American intelligence specialist. In 2016, she leaked an intelligence report that revealed Russian interference in the 2016 US elections via email phishing scams. For her role in the leak, Winner was given the longest sentence ever for the unauthorized release of government information: five years and three months in federal prison. The movie will also star Josh Hamilton and Marchánt Davis. Riva Marker, Noah Stahl, Brad Becker-Parton, and Greg Nobile produce the project. Ellyn Daniels, Will O’Connor, Daniel Ginsberg, Bill Way, Elliott Whitton, Eva Maria Daniels, Andrew Beck, Cinereach, and Satter are on as executive producers. David Duque-Estrada and Rita Walsh co-produce.

Sydney Sweeney is on a roll lately. In addition to the acclaim she’s received for shows like Euphoria and The White Lotus, she has two more movies on the docket along with this recent Reality Winner announcement. Sweeney is set to star in National Anthem next, which is currently in post-production. National Anthem will tell the unique story of a rare Lakota Ghost shirt hitting the black market in a small South Dakota town, causing violence to erupt. The movie is written and directed by Tony Tost, with Harriet Sansom Harris, Zahn McClarnon, Halsey, Eric Dane, Paul Walter Hauser, Toby Huss, Simon Rex, and more starring alongside Sweeney.

Syndey Sweeney will also be diving into the world of superhero cinema in the upcoming Madame Web film from Sony. Dakota Johnson will be playing the titular role in this movie, which tells the story of a clairvoyant mutant named Madame Web. The movie is part of Sony’s semi-successful Spiderverse, where they make solo movies based on the Spider-Man characters they have the rights to. Some efforts have been successful commercially, while others have not so much. It seems like for every Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse or Venom, there’s a Morbius to hold them back a little. Of course, Sony also reaped the benefits from the massively successful MCU entry Spider-Man: No Way Home, so it’s not too surprising that they’re going full steam ahead with their Spiderverse efforts.

Madame Web will be directed by S.J. Clarkson with a screenplay by Kerem Sanga, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. In addition to Syndey Sweeney and Dakota Johnson, the movie stars Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, and Tahar Rahim. No word on when Sweeney’s Reality Winner movie is releasing, but stay tuned to find out more.
