Sydney Sweeney Forgot To Warn Her Dad About Euphoria
Sydney Sweeney says her father and grandfather were so shocked by what they saw in Euphoria, they refused to continue watching it.
Sydney Sweeney has revealed how her family reacted after watching Euphoria for the first time. In a sneak peek of an upcoming episode of Sunday Today with Willie Geist, the actress said she forgot to warn her dad about the nature of the hit series. As a result, she decided to watch the series with her parents, which made for a very awkward experience.
“I didn’t prepare my dad at all,” Sydney Sweeney said via The Hollywood Reporter. Not knowing what the series had in store, her dad and grandpa ditched the show and left the room. “My dad and my grandpa turned it off and walked out,” the Reality star added. Sweeney explained that she didn’t know how to discuss the subject with her father.
“When I talk to my dad, it’s usually not about work,” Sydney Sweeney said. “We talk, like, father-daughter conversations.” However, she did talk to her mom about the content of Euphoria, and she was prepared. “My mom visited me on set at the time, so she knew the story, and I talked to her a lot about it – my dad didn’t,” the actress continued.
Sydney Sweeney also shared a cute piece of information about her grandma, who is her biggest cheerleader. “My grandma… she’s a big supporter of mine,” the actress added. “She’s a big fan of mine. I bring her, usually, all over the world to my different sets, and I make her an extra.” Sweeney also delved into the immense impact Euphoria has had on younger viewers.
Describing the HBO hit as “amazing” and a cultural phenomenon, Sydney Sweeney expressed her fondness for her character and the complex layers within the role. “There’s so much [about] Cassie that I loved, especially in the beginning,” she said. “I always tend to drift towards characters who might read one way on a page, and I like to find the layers to that character.”
Uncovering Cassie’s emotional complexity and motivations has been a captivating journey for the 25-year-old. Sydney Sweeney also revealed that she enjoys pushing boundaries and embraces the opportunity to play characters that make unconventional choices. “As an actor, that’s just so much fun to kind of stretch your legs and play characters that go insane and make all these crazy choices.”
Euphoria premiered on HBO in June 2019. Created by Sam Levinson, the series is based on the Israeli miniseries of the same name from Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin. The story follows a group of high school students navigating love, friendships, and the challenges of adolescence in a world filled with drugs, sex, trauma, and social media.
The main character of the series is Rue Bennett (portrayed by Zendaya), a teenage girl who is a recovering drug addict struggling with anxiety and depression. As the series unfolds, viewers are introduced to a diverse range of characters (including Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie) dealing with their own struggles and issues.
Euphoria received praise for its exceptional acting performances, compelling storytelling, stunning visuals, and willingness to tackle complicated subject matter honestly. The series has been recognized with Emmy nominations for its acting, cinematography, and music, solidifying its reputation as a critically acclaimed production.
However, the Sydney Sweeney series has also faced criticism for its explicit sexual content and nudity. Euphoria, which also features Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Angus Cloud, Maude Apatow, Alexa Demie, and Barbie Ferreira, will return for a third season. A premiere date is yet to be announced.
