Sword Art Online Spin-Off Anime Is Coming Soon

By Douglas Helm | Published

After years of waiting, the Sword Art Online spin-off Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is coming back with a second season this October. Both the official website and the social media accounts for the anime announced that the premiere will air in Japan on Friday, October 4. There is no word yet on when other fans will be able to stream it, but Crunchyroll currently has the critically acclaimed first season available to watch.

From MMORPG To Battle Royale

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is based on the spin-off novels by Keiichi Shigusawa and Kohaku Kuroboshi, with Masayuki Sakoi directing, Yosuke Kuroda on series composition, and Yoshio Kozakai handling character designs. Sakoi directs at Studio 3Hz. As you might have guessed from the title, this spin-off puts the MMORPG world of SOA into a shooter, with protagonist Karen Kohiruimaki taking on the avatar of LLENN.

If You See The Pink Smoke, You’re Going To Lose

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online follows Kohiruimaki as she honed her skills as LLENN and becomes known as the Pink Devil due to her penchant for hunting down other players. Her small-statured avatar dons an all-pink outfit and uses a pink submachine-gun named “P-chan.” On her adventures in the online world of Gun Gale Online, she meets a player known as Pitohui, who takes on a mentor role for LLENN.

Six Years Between Seasons

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online will see A-1 Pictures take over the animation for the series after 3Hz handled the first season. The first season came out way back in April 2018, so this has been a long time coming for fans of the series. The second season will see LLENN and Pitohui teaming up with M and Fukaziroh to form a powerful team known as LPFM.

LPFM will take on a unique new challenge in Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online Season 2, as the team must enter a battle royale death match tournament. While LPFM is seen as the favorite to win the tournament, they’ll face quite a few challenges along the way, including having to follow a set of special rules. It sounds like there’s going to be plenty of action for the second season for fans to look forward to.

Sword Art Online Is Incredibly Popular

The flagship Sword Art Online is a light novel series written by Reki Kawahara that has sold 30 million copies worldwide, which spawned the successful and popular anime adaptation along with several films and the Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online spin-off. Netflix also has the rights to adapt a live-action series, though there hasn’t been much news on that front since Netflix snapped it up.

Catch Up On Season 1

While Netflix has been sitting on the Sword Art Online live-action rights since 2018, there’s a possibility the streamer might show some additional interest in putting it back on track after the success of the One Piece live-action series. In the meantime, fans can look forward to Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online finally returning this October. You can stream the entire first season on Crunchyroll now to get ready for the debut of Season 2.
