After meeting and falling in love during production, Supernatural cast members Jared Padalecki and real-life wife Genevieve will play a married couple on The CW’s Walker, Texas Ranger reboot.
In the new series, simply called Walker, Jared will play Cordell Walker (played by Chuck Norris in the original show), a widowed father of two. Genevieve will play his late wife, Emily, in various flashbacks. TV Guide reports that the first season will deal with the mysterious circumstances surrounding Emily’s death.
Walker, which Jared will not only star in but also co-produce, is about the eponymous character returning home to Austin after two years of undercover work. His homecoming will lead him to try and reconnect with his two children and try to contend with his conservative family.
Genevieve’s other acting credits include ABC Family’s Wildfire, ABC’s Flashforward, and most recently, the lead in the 2012 film, Hated.
Genevieve Padalecki rounds out an already packed supporting cast. The 100’s Lindsey Morgan has been cast as Micki, Cordell’s new partner, Jeff Pierre from Once Upon a Time will play Micki’s boyfriend, and Pretty Little Liars’ Keegan Allen is Liam, Walker’s younger conservative brother who is an assistant district attorney. Mitch Pileggi and Molly Hagan will play Cordell’s parents, Mitch and Abeline Walker, respectively.
The couple met when Genevieve played the demon Ruby in Season 4 of Supernatural, a part in which she recently reprised in the season’s fifteenth and final season. The Supernatural cast mates were married in 2010 and have three children together.
In a 2012 panel for Supernatural, Jared Padalecki talked about the first time meeting his wife:
“I was a single dude, and she was a pretty girl in her underwear on her first day on set. I was very excited to meet her. Meanwhile, I think she was like, ‘Who is this long-haired A-hole who thinks he can come talk to me while I’m reading a book?…I interrupted her while she was reading a book and I think she got kind of fussy about it.” Jared said of why their relationship is so strong, “What made it work is that we got to know each other for about four months before we went on a date.”
Walker, Texas Ranger originally aired on CBS for eight seasons, from 1993 to 2001. The series was followed by a television movie, Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire, and received a short-lived spin-off series, Sons of Thunder, which only ran for two months on CBS in 1999.
Walker is just one of many reboots The CW has added to their schedule in recent years. Dynasty in 2017, is a reboot of the 1980s series of the same name, while both Charmed and Roswell, New Mexico are both modern updates of shows that began on The WB, which ultimately became The CW after a merger with UPN in 2006.
According to Deadline, Walker is looking to start production in Austin – where the Padalecki family lives – around mid-October, with the plan for a January 2021 premiere.
