Superman & Lois Canceled? DC Announces Its Fate
James Gunn has predicted that the Superman & Lois TV series will only last for one or two more seasons.
James Gunn, DC Studio’s new CEO, has finally started letting us in on what’s in store for the films and shows in the DC Universe. Aside from new updates about a new Superman film and a Booster Gold series (among more than 10 other projects), he also let fans know about the fate of fan-favorite CW show Superman & Lois. According to CBR, Gunn and his co-CEO Peter Safran predict that the show will most likely go on for “one or two more seasons.”
So, we don’t have to say goodbye to Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch’s Clark Kent and Lois Lane just yet … but the show’s future isn’t very bright. But that isn’t exactly James Gunn or DC’s fault. The CW was recently acquired by Nexstar Media Group, which is in the process of phasing out all the DC programming on the network.
The only remaining DC shows on the channel are The Flash, which is entering its ninth and final season, and Gotham Knights, which is scheduled to debut on March 14, the same night as Season 3 of Superman & Lois. The end of the Arrowverse seems nigh, but James Gunn is seemingly guaranteeing at least one more season of the DC show based on Superman’s family.
Developed by Greg Berlanti and Todd Helbing, Superman & Lois began with Superman/Clark Kent and his wife, Lois Lane, moving back to the former’s Earthly hometown of Smallville with their two sons. They reconnect with Lana Lang, Superman’s first love, and her family, and everything seems like apple pie and American dreams until two villains show up to ruin everything.
So far, threats have ranged from The Stranger and Morgan Edge to Bizarro Superman to a cult called the Inverse Method, and Season 3 will bring back an even bigger baddie: Lex Luthor. Luthor has a score to settle, and he will stop at nothing to make Superman and Lois Lane pay for what they did to wrong him.
James Gunn’s other big DC-related announcements included the potential release date of a new Superman film (July 11, 2025), as well as some other huge, intriguing projects. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a “Game of Thrones-style” film set on Themyscira, the birthplace of Wonder Woman, is in the works, as is an animated series involving a military team from DC Comics called Creature Commandos.
DC Studios’ goal, according to James Gunn, is to “take our diamond characters — which is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman — and we use them to prop up other characters that people don’t know.” This is why the new Superman movie is said to be a part of a story that expands out into at least 10 other films and shows and introduces new characters as well as new incarnations of ones already present in the DC films and shows.
What this means for The CW’s Superman & Lois is, well, honestly, not much. It doesn’t sound like the show will be a main focus for the studio, as there seems to be an expiration date set by the television network, not James Gunn or DC. There have been rumors, though, that if a superhero show does well and draws in enough viewers, the new investors will consider keeping it around, so there’s always hope that we could see Superman & Lois extend past one or two more seasons.
