Superman: Legacy Casts Villain And It’s Totally Out Of Left Field
Deadline announced that Venezuelan actress Maria Gabriela de Faria is the newest cast member of James Gunn’s highly anticipated upcoming DCU film Superman: Legacy. Maria Gabriela de Faria is best known for her roles in the Fox comedies Animal Control and The Moodys and she will be playing Angela Spica aka The Engineer. While The Engineer is typically part of the superhero team The Authority, Deadline reported that she will be part of the film’s villain team, which is an interesting wrinkle.
The Engineer
Presumably, The Engineer will still have a similar powerset in Superman: Legacy, whether she’s a villain or not. The Engineer possesses a genius-level intellect and injects herself with nanotechnology, which gives her various interesting powers. The character was initially created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch and Spica is the second DC character to adopt the name of Engineer.
Changing From A Hero To A Foe?
As we saw in James Gunn’s previous superhero projects like the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker, he’s not afraid to bring some more esoteric characters to the forefront. He’s also not afraid to change his characters a bit from their comic book versions, which is why Superman: Legacy might be positioning the character as a villain. In any case, this likely won’t be the last time we see The Engineer, as it’s likely that Gunn is trying to introduce the character before she appears in the DCU’s film about The Authority team.
Maria Gabriela de Faria As The Engineer
Maria Gabriela de Faria joins the ever-expanding list of cast members for Superman: Legacy that includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho.
There is very little we know about the film at this point, other than the fact that the plot will revolve around Superman trying to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his Earth upbringing. As the article mentioned, The Engineer is part of the film’s villain team, so we essentially don’t know all the antagonists that Superman will be up against yet.
Lex Luthor The Main Villain?
Many rumors suggest that Superman: Legacy is going to have long-time Superman nemesis Lex Luthor as the primary villain, though those rumors have yet to be confirmed. Perhaps The Engineer will be working with Luthor and decide to flip to the good side at some point during the film. Or maybe The Engineer will turn out to be the main baddie, which would really flip the character’s comic book origins on its head.
Superman: Legacy Keeps Its Scheduled Release Date
In some good news, Superman: Legacy writer and director James Gunn announced that the film is still scheduled to maintain its July 11, 2025 release date, so we hopefully won’t see any more delays from the film that is set to properly kick off the DCU. Gunn and Peter Safran laid out a bold strategy for the DCU that included an array of intriguing movies and TV shows over the course of the next decade or so. There’s a lot riding on this Superman film, so it’ll be interesting to see if the DCU can get off to a strong start.
