James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy Finds New Fortress Of Solitude?
According to James Gunn and Stephane Carreti’s social media posts, the co-CEO of DC Universe and the VFX supervisor for Superman: Legacy recently took a trip to Norway. The photos that were shared started a rumor mill with fandom discussing that the location they were visiting could potentially be used for the Fortress of Solitude.
Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is scheduled to begin filming in 2024, so it stands to reason that the production crew is scouting locations prior to filming. The theory surrounding the Fortress of Solitude, however, isn’t without foundation.
The fandom is well-acquainted with the Fortress, which has yet to appear in its traditional form in the modern DC Universe.
One of Caretti’s social media pages shows the Northern Lights, which actually pair well with the idea of the Arctic and its vast ice plains and glaciers that house Superman’s iconic Fortress in its crystalline form, where the Man of Steel reflects, recharges, and access vast Kryptonian knowledge.
The fandom is well-acquainted with the Fortress, which has yet to appear in its traditional form in the modern DC Universe. Previous DCEU films, such as Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and both Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, featured their own in-universe version of the Fortress.
However, it was represented as an ancient Kryptonian scout ship rather than the classic crystalline structure from the previous movies and comics. So, there really wasn’t a Superman movie without a Fortress, and Superman: Legacy won’t break the tradition.
Some fans are convinced Superman: Legacy will feature a comic-accurate Fortress of Solitude after James Gunn shared images of his visit to Norway with the upcoming movie’s VFX designer.
Of course, while all of this is still highly speculative, it begs further questions. Assuming that the Fortress really appears in the upcoming Superman: Legacy, what kind of impact could it have on the narrative of the movie?
We already know that the upcoming film won’t dive into Kal-El’s arrival on Earth and his struggles to try and balance his social life while learning how to control his powers. In the previous iteration, the Fortress mainly played a plot device that provided Superman with insight into who and what he really is.
But if he’s already an established hero in Superman: Legacy, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll go through Fortress’s records learning about Krypton or why his parents had to send him away. Zack Snyder’s Justice League gave Kal-El the Black Suit, also known as the Recovery Suit, following his awakening from a Kryptonian coma after his battle with Doomsday. So, it’s also safe to assume that, besides serving as his safe space, the Fortress also serves as Superman’s infirmary, as well as a library and occasional accommodations.

While James Gunn has been forthcoming regarding his Superman: Legacy movie, the truth is that there are still plenty of things we don’t know about the upcoming release, as well as the role the Fortress as a structure has performed in the movie. Perhaps the film’s opening scene takes place in the Fortress, or there’s some crucial piece of tech that can help Superman defeat the film’s Big Bad. Perhaps it contains knowledge about the film’s antagonist and how to beat him, or it’s quite possible that it’s all of the above.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for the film’s release to find out. Superman: Legacy is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025.
