Long-Awaited Superhero Movie Reboot Gets Title And Update From Horror Maestro
Horror director/writer/producer Jason Blum recently took to X to update us about the long-gestating Spawn movie. Blum posted the front page of the screenplay, revealing that the title of the film is King Spawn and that the screenplay is done. This is also the title of the Spawn comic book series that came out in 2021, which could give us some clues to what the storyline for the film will be.
Spawn Is Coming Back
King Spawn has been in the works for quite some time now, as creator Todd McFarlane has been talking about a new Spawn movie as far back as 2005.
In 2015, McFarlane revealed that a new film was officially in development. In 2016, he revealed that he had completed a script and wanted to direct the film. McFarlane was then attached officially to direct in 2017, at which point Jason Blum’s Blumhouse production company was attached to produce the project.
Jamie Foxx Gets To Be A Hero
The slow leak of production news for King Spawn continued in 2018 when it was reported that Jamie Foxx was attached to play the titular character. However, things got further delayed in 2019 when reports said the film was restarting development with Brian Tucker on board to rewrite the screenplay. Finally, McFarlane announced in 2022 that Scott Silver, Malcolm Spellman, and Matthew Mixon were brought on to rewrite the screenplay again, leading us to this most recent announcement that the screenplay was finally wrapped up and that King Spawn is the official title.
Decades Of Waiting
It’s a long time before any film is in development, but fans are happy that King Spawn is still moving along rather than being canceled. Jason Blum also announced not long ago that the film was looking at a 2025 release date, though it remains to be seen if that pans out. It also remains to be seen if Foxx is still going to star in the film or if McFarlane is still going to direct, as it’s been a long time since both of those announcements were made.
Pulling From The Hit Series
In any case, reading the 2021 comic series King Spawn might be prep for what’s to come, as that series followed the titular character as he faces down enemies to become the king of Hell. If the film isn’t an outright adaptation of that storyline, it seems likely that it’ll at least pull some elements from it. It’s been a long time since we’ve had any Spawn-related content on our screens, so fans will take anything at this point.
The Forgettable First Film
The last time Spawn starred in his own feature film was 1997’s Spawn, which starred Michael Jai White as the titular hero, though the series was met with mostly negative reviews. Hopefully, King Spawn will be a better effort and be more on par with Spawn: The Animated Series, which received acclaim from fans and earned an Emmy. While Spawn hasn’t had a lot of on-screen appearances over the years, he’s remained an iconic figure in comic book culture and should definitely attract a crowd when the film eventually comes to theaters.
This exciting King Spawn update and the release window target of 2025 means we should hopefully get some more news about the film soon. At the very least, it would be cool to get some confirmation about the director and star of the film. We’ll keep you updated as this story continues to develop.
