Superhero Icon Curses The Snyder Cut
One of the things that made James Gunn’s Peacemaker show so hilarious is that it took every possible opportunity to make fun of the biggest names in the world of DC. This included Green Arrow, whom John Cena’s character claims “goes to Brony conventions dressed as the back half of Twilight Sparkle with a four-inch-wide butthole drilled in the costume.” Now, in an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Arrow star Stephen Amell has responded with a vulgar rant in which he claims that “when people think about the most recent iteration of DC, okay, they don’t think about the Snyder Cut, they think about Arrow.”
The veteran superhero actor first clarified exactly how he felt about Peacemaker taking a jab at Green Arrow. “I didn’t f******* appreciate that at all,” he said, complaining that the show’s swipe at his iconic character “was crude.” But this soon pivoted into a miniature tirade in which Stephen Amell first complained that modern audiences “don’t think about the Snyder Cut” before claiming that he and his fellow Arrowverse stars “got crapped on for years and years and years,” making the Peacemaker joke seem “excessive.”
Honestly, in this portion of the interview, it’s not entirely clear who the primary target of Stephen Amell’s anger really is. He also claimed that “between the movies and between Peacemaker…our show was kind of treated like s***.” This was when he claimed that modern audiences more clearly associate DC with Arrow than with the Snyder Cut, making it sound like the ones responsible for him and his show getting “crapped on for years” were unnamed movers and shakers over at Warner Bros. Discovery.
Whoever Stephen Amell is mad at, it’s clear that he has a grudge that has been simmering for years. Presumably responding to the Peacemaker jab, he said, “I just remember hearing that and being like, ‘F*** those guys.’” He says that he worked “just as hard as anyone else” and claimed that it was “really, really, really hard” for him “to play a superhero with no superpowers for 23 episodes a year.”

Finishing up the rant, Stephen Amell clarified, “I’m not looking for a prize, but maybe don’t s*** on our show.” His passion on this matter is very clear, but his anger also mystified many fans because the actor seemed to automatically assume that Peacemaker’s joking reference to the Green Arrow character must be dunking on Amell and his incarnation of the character.
Considering that Peacemaker has nothing to do with the Snyder Cut, it’s a bit bizarre that this beloved Justice League film ended up catching strays during Stephen Amell’s rant.
After all, the DCEU had entirely new actors for all of its iconic characters, and Amell’s outsized anger at a joke about a character who was never even cast felt more than a bit misplaced. It seemed like the angry actor equivalent of, say, Chris O’Donnell freaking out about a modern Robin joke made long after he played the character back in the ‘90s.
At any rate, this isn’t even the first time that Stephen Amell spoke out about Peacemaker’s hilarious Green Arrow Joke. Two years ago, he took to X (formerly Twitter) to say that he hadn’t watched the show while also taking a swipe at series star John Cena. “Too busy showing Cena what professional wrestling should actually look like on TV,” he wrote.

It really does seem like a bit of jealousy that Warner Bros. effectively turned its back on its television Arrowverse when filling the DCEU with stars who were new to these respective franchises. We never saw Green Arrow onscreen in that cinematic universe, but if the character pops up in the DCU, we can only hope that he crosses paths with Peacemaker for the one-on-one no-holds-barred match we never got at Wrestlemania.
