Supergirl Movie Villain Finally Cast

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

Right now, when you mention Supergirl, most DC fans think of the Arrowverse show of the same name. However, James Gunn is hoping to change all of that with his DCU, a new cinematic universe that will introduce a new Supergirl film. Milly Alcock will be playing the title role in this Craig Gillespie-directed film, and we now know who she will be fighting: Matthias Schoenaerts will be playing the film’s as-yet-unnamed Supergirl villain.

Matthias Schoenarts Cast As Supergirl Villain

Right now, Schoenaerts is best known for Rust and Bone, and he’s very good, earning a Cesar for Most Promising Actor. As for Alcock, she is best known for her performance on House of the Dragon, so she is no stranger to high-profile genre roles. Playing Supergirl will give the talented actor a chance to prove herself as a leading lady of tentpole blockbusters, but you can expect to see her at least once in the DCU before she gets her own film and squares off against Schoenaerts’ villain.

Milly Alcock Supergirl Rumored To Appear In Superman

Most of what we know about this DCU character and her film appearances comes from various hints and announcements that James Gunn has made. For example, we know that she will appear in another DC project before the Supergirl film, but we don’t know who the central hero or villain of that movie or TV show will be. It’s a safe bet that she will be introduced in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, though that has not been confirmed by Gunn himself.

Schoenaerts Playing Krem Of The Yellow Hills?

While we don’t officially know much about the Supergirl movie or which villain Matthias Schoenaerts will be playing, we can make some educated guesses about the villain’s onscreen identity. For example, the movie will be adapting Tom King’s excellent 2022 comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. In that comic, the Big Bad was Krem of the Yellow Hills, someone whose murder of a young alien’s father ends up drawing Supergirl into conflict with the evil villain.

It stands to reason, then, that Krem will similarly be the Big Bad of the Supergirl movie and that Schoenaerts will play the villain’s role. Just as with Alcock, this movie represents the biggest project yet for Schoenaerts. However, fans of the actor can tell you that he has been kicking all kinds of butt in a variety of roles and is more than ready to become a blockbuster cinematic heavyweight.

Schoenaerts’ Hollywood Resume

For example, in addition to killing it on Rust and Bone, Schoenaerts has performed in the HBO show The Regime alongside Titanic star Kate Winslet. And he has starred in Red Sparrow alongside Hunger Games icon Jennifer Lawrence. Perhaps most relevant to him playing Supergirl’s onscreen villain is that he has also starred in The Old Guard alongside Charlize Theron.

Supergirl Is Sure To Be A Hit

On paper, we understand there’s a cart before the horse (or maybe cart before the Fortress of Solitude) issue here and that we should wait to see how good James Gunn’s Superman movie is before we get hyped for spinoffs. Nonetheless, everything we’ve heard about Supergirl sounds great, from the hit comic that it is adopting to the great casting for both the central hero and her villain. Plus, let’s face it: who better to break through the superhero glass ceiling than a character who can fly?
