The High-Stakes Drama On Netflix About The App That Changed The World
Showtime may have unceremoniously removed Super Pumped from its streaming service early this year, but that’s good news for Netflix subscribers, as the drama series is now available to stream. The series got relatively good reviews and was particularly praised for the performances of the main cast. Head over to Netflix now if you want to check it out.
Super Pumped is an anthology series by Brian Koppelman and David Levien that is named after the 2019 non-fiction book of the same name by Mike Isaac.
The first installment of the anthology is subtitled The Battle for Uber and follows the rise and fall of ex-Uber CEO Travis Kalanick (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). The series also stars Kyle Chandler, Uma Thurman, Elisabeth Shue, Kerry Bishe, Babak Tafti, Jon Bass, Virginia Kull, Amanda Brooks, Annie Chang, Erinn Ruth, Mishka Thebaud, Richard Schiff, Hank Azaria, Uma Thurman, and Bridget Gao Hollitt, with narration from Quentin Tarantino.
Super Pumped: The Battle Uber, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, was originally a Showtime series, but now, it’s on Netflix.
As mentioned, Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber received relatively good reviews, with Gordon-Levitt, in particular, receiving a lot of praise. For those who want to see the darker side of Silicon Valley and the cutthroat nature of some of these tech companies, it’s definitely an interesting watch. Although it doesn’t live up to the lofty highs of other tech company biopics like The Social Network, it’s still worth checking out.
For now, it remains to be seen if Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber will be the final season of what was supposed to be an anthology season. The series was renewed in 2022 and is set to focus on Facebook this time around, with a brand new cast along for the ride. The second season will also bring back Koppelman, Levien, and Beth Schacter as writers, exec producers, and showrunners.
Paul Schiff is also set to return as executive producer on Super Pumped, which, at this point, is still set to be produced by Showtime. While Facebook’s origins would be treading the familiar ground that was already masterfully covered in The Social Network, the second season of Super Pumped is set to focus on the relationship relationship between Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and founder Mark Zuckerberg.
The series would be set during the time that the company was quickly transitioning from a blockbuster startup to one of the biggest tech companies that would end up having huge ramifications for the state of the world.
Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber will appeal to fans of The Social Network, Silicon Valley, or Halt and Catch Fire.
However, it does seem like the second season of Super Pumped is in a bit of a limbo state, as there hasn’t been news of the second season since the 2022 announcement. The removal of the series from Showtime’s streaming service also had to do with the Paramount+ streaming platform restructuring, but many of the shows that Showtime removed during this time were outright canceled. These canceled shows were also given the opportunity to shop out future seasons to other outlets, so it’s possible that Super Pumped will go in a similar direction.
However, there has been nothing official on the front of Super Pumped, so it appears that Showtime is still involved in making a second season for the time being. With the WGA strike being over, perhaps we’ll hear more news about the second season soon. However, it seems like we won’t be getting the second season, if it does happen, until 2024 at the very earliest.
There was talk of a second season of Super Pumped, focusing on Facebook, but Showtime hasn’t made an official announcement.
Since Super Pumped is an anthology series, it would make sense for Showtime to give the show another chance at another season. Although ratings weren’t stellar for the first season and reviews were mixed, there’s always a chance that the second season could be better and bring in a lot of attention since it’s telling a brand new story about one of the biggest companies in the world. There are also numerous tech company stories left to tell, so there is presumably plenty of material for the show to make many more seasons if necessary.
Until we hear more about the second season of the series, Netflix subscribers can at least catch up with Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber now. You can head over to Netflix to stream the entire season if you’re interested in checking it out. We’ll keep you updated on the status of the second season in the meantime.
