Fan-Favorite The Suicide Squad Hero Appearing In Peacemaker Season 2?
James Gunn has hinted that a Suicide Squad fan-favorite character may appear in Peacemaker season two, but dare we get out hopes up?
Peacemaker season 2 has to be one of the most unexpectedly anticipated shows of recent memory. When the first season of the James Gunn-led, John Cena-starring HBO Max series was greenlit, it sounded like a good enough deal. The James Gunn soft reboot The Suicide Squad had been an enormous step up from its 2016 predecessor (though that wasn’t entirely director David Ayers’ fault), bringing in Gunn’s trademark combination of gallows humor and heartfelt sentiment. In particular, Cena’s turn as the jingoistic, ultraviolet vigilante Christopher Smith/Peacemaker was noted as part of the wrestler’s increasingly impressive acting talents. When the season turned out to be one of the most critically acclaimed (and popular) shows on television, it made waiting for Peacemaker season 2 that much harder to wait for. Especially when that rascal James Gunn just Tweeted this:
Yes, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy sure seems to be implying that the Suicide Squad member known only as Weasel might potentially make an appearance in Peacemaker season 2. While Weasel (who was portrayed in motion capture by actor/younger brother Sean Gunn) had only a brief time in the sun in the 2021 version of The Suicide Squad, he was swiftly embraced by fans for his weird, gross charm. Although the non-verbal character was a convicted criminal and apparently had killed 27 children at some point, the strangely magnetic repellent quality of the drooling, furry something or other seemed to charm audiences. When Weasel was swiftly dispatched (by nobody checking to see if he could swim before being dumped into the ocean), it both set a tone for the goofy violence to come and marked an end to a divinely-inspired character. Or did it?
We shall have to see. Peacemaker 2 is quite some time off at the moment, and James Gunn is certainly not above teasing his fans on Twitter. While the violent, watery death of Weasel would seem to make it a hard “no” that the character will reappear to fight alongside Peacemaker, Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), Eagly the Eagle (himself), and all the others, this is, after all, a comic book adaptation. There is plenty of precedent for dead characters coming back to life. If Superman can come back to life through some not-very-specific combination of 2 different alien technologies and Ezra Miller running really fast, why can a simple Weasel not be brought back from beyond the grave? We say no such reason exists.
Peacemaker season 2 is estimated to arrive no earlier than January of 2023 at best. In the meantime, James Gunn is busy with both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (which may or may not feature a role for the boy who danced away oppression, Kevin Bacon). John Cena has a full slate of projects ahead of him, including Matthew Vaughn’s ensemble spy film Argylle, the Wile E. Coyote movie, and an action film partnering him with martial arts legend Jackie Chan. And as for Weasel…we can only pray.
