Although we’ve seen quite a few teasers for the fourth season of Stranger Things, none of them gave viewers any real insight into the actual story. But all that changed when Netflix finally released the full-length trailer for the sci-fi series that gives fans a look at the next chapter’s villain. As previously confirmed by Giant Freakin Robot’s trusted and proven sources, Stranger Things has a new villain for the upcoming final seasons. We previously wrote a detailed exclusive report on the villain, and those details are now being confirmed by the showrunners themselves. The Stranger Things season 4 villain will be known as Vecna, and they’re promising big things.

In an interview with IGN, the Duffer brothers remained rather secretive about what fans can expect from the Stranger Things villain in the upcoming season. They did confirm our report that the character is named Vecna. And Matt and Ross did reveal that the creature is brought to life on screen using 90% practical effects. While the trailer doesn’t divulge the evil-doer’s end game, it does ominously tell the teens that their suffering is almost at an end.
We have a few more details than that. According to our trusted and proven insider, just like Eleven, the new Stranger Things villain started out as one of the children being experimented on at Hawkins National Laboratory. Vecna was Number One. As our source explained, the lab sent the child into the Upside Down, where he or she was transformed into a spider-like monster with the ability to entrance its victims before killing them. After years in the mirrored world, the season’s big bad eventually became its leader and will be a formidable adversary to the teenage band of heroes.
Moreover, from the brief glimpses of the Stranger Things villain in the trailer, we get to see that its appearance is everything you’d expect from the leader of the Upside Down. Vecna has sunken eyes, deep-set wrinkles, and tentacle-like tendrils around its neck and shoulders. And in true Stranger Things style, the creature’s name originates comes from a Dungeons & Dragons lore character.
The fourth season of Stranger Things will set the stage for the series’ curtain call at the end of season five. The story begins six months after the destructive Battle of Starcourt shook the sleepy town of Hawkins to its core. Struggling to deal with the aftermath, the teenage pals are separated for the first time. And trying to navigate the complexities of high school life hasn’t made it easier. Things take a turn for the worse when a new supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a terrifying villain that may finally put an end to the Upside Down’s mysteries forever.
Stranger Things season four with its brand new villain will receive a global release exclusively on Netflix. Consisting of nine episodes the season will be released in two volumes starting on May 27th. The second begins five weeks later on July 1st. The show’s main cast is set to return in its entirety. This includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, and Cara Buono. Brett Gelman has been promoted to series regular for the last two seasons.
