Stranger Things season 4 left audiences with many questions about the fate of many established characters, both young and old. Eddie Munson is a character that is featured prominently in the season, introduced as a slacker type in Hawkins, Indiana, who becomes the de facto leader of The Hellfire Club. Eddie is played by British actor Joseph Quinn, who sees his life cut short by his journey into the Upside Down, as well as a swarm of demobats. For a one-season entry, Quinn made his mark playing the ill-fated Eddie, peaking in the final moments of the season with a guitar solo to Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” as a way to distract the demobats that would ultimately end his life.

According to details by comicbook.com, a lot of preparation went into Eddie’s guitar solo, which created a lot of tension during pivotal sequences in Stranger Things season four, Volume 2. Videos of Joseph Quinn practicing behind the scenes for his climactic moment have surfaced on social media, posted by the Stranger Things writer’s room’s official Twitter account. In the videos, the actor can be seen playing the guitar himself, something he wanted to convey to audiences rather than pretending to play the song. As reported by Looper, Quinn has a background in music, and the actor confirmed that “It’s pretty much all of me” playing during the scene. Entertainment Tonight also reports that Quinn had some assistance from Tye Trujillo, son of Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo, who provided additional guitar tracks featured in the episode.

Stranger Things season four was filled with a lot of nostalgic moments that quickly entered the pop culture zeitgeist in 2022. Two songs, in particular, went viral for their inclusion in the series, Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” and Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God).” While Metallica’s song made Joseph Quinn a household name with his rocking conclusion to the series, Kate Bush has seen record-breaking upticks in popularity since the start of summer. “Running Up That Hill” was featured prominently in the same season, primarily due to Max Mayfield’s obsession with the song and a pinnacle moment in volume 1 that saw Max outsmarting Vecna with the use of Kate Bush’s vocals. Both pieces have become hits some forty years after their initial debuts, making Metallica and Kate Bush TikTok stars for a new generation.

As impressive as his musical abilities and guitar shredding skills are in Stranger Things season four, Joseph Quinn is starting to get noticed as an actor, something he’s earned for some time. In 2019, Quinn played Prince Paul in HBO’s Catherine the Great, starring Helen Mirren, and portrayed Koner in the seventh season of Game of Thrones. After mastering an American accent for Stranger Things, Quinn will next be seen in Hoard, directed by Luna Carmoon. According to Elite Daily, Metallica has also capitalized on the revitalized success of “Master of Puppets,” taking to TikTok for a duet with Quinn’s Eddie Munson.
