When it comes to science fiction genres, there may be no bigger fanbase than that of Star Trek. With successful ventures in television, film, games, and fan fiction, the franchise often features familiar characters such as James T. Kirk and Commander Spock. The creation born from the mind of Gene Roddenberry has taken on a multitude of incarnations since its inception in the 1960s. This month, Paramount+ has unveiled its most recent television series starring a new generation of characters and some familiar ones entitled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered on the Paramount+ on May 5, 2022, and will have a 10-episode run on the streaming service. With two episodes released already as of this writing, critics have flocked to the defense of this new series with mostly positive reviews so far. Rotten Tomatoes currently has the show listed with a 98% on their Tomatometer, and an Audience Score for users with an 83% rating. As of today, Paramount+ released the series premiere for free via YouTube where anyone can view the first episode without a subscription to their streaming service.

As the 11th Star Trek series to date, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds may just be a treasured show going forward. As Deadline reports, the series was already renewed for a second season before the first episode of the first season premiered. Following the adventures of the crew of the USS Enterprise, the Paramount+ hit is a prequel to the original Star Trek series and was created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet. The three creators are expanding on the franchise with their Star Trek: Universe, as this series is seen as a spin-off of the successful Star Trek: Discovery, now also available on Paramount+.

The first episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finds audiences embracing new heroes while they face unexpected challenges in deep space. We meet Captain Christopher Pike, who is played by Anson Mount, and was originally introduced in Star Trek: Discovery. Captain Pike was retired but comes out of hiding in order to locate and save an officer who went missing. Revelations about a secret mission will push the crew of the USS Enterprise into unknown territory and set the stage for Captain T. Kirk and his famous crew later on.

Along with Mount, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features an all-star cast that will undoubtedly become fan favorites. Ethan Peck reprises his role from Star Trek: Discovery as a younger version of the ship’s Science Officer Spock from the original series. Rounding out the cast is Jess Bush as nurse Christine Chapel (a role often seen through the franchise), Christina Chong as Chief of Security La’an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as linguistics expert Nyota Uhura (a role famously originated by Nichelle Nichols), and Rebecca Romijn as First Officer Number One, often viewed as second in command to Captain Pike.

The remaining episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will run through July 7th, with new episodes debuting on Paramount+ every Thursday.
