Paramount+ has revealed the first trailer for the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Unveiled at the Star Trek Day Celebration, the two-minute sneak peek offered fans a glimpse at Lt. Erica Ortegas preparing for a rare away team assignment with Captain Pike, Lt. La’An Noonien-Singh, and Dr. M’Benga. The streamer also revealed that Carol Kane (of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame) will be joining the cast for the upcoming installment as Pelia.

While there aren’t many details about how Kane’s character will join the Enterprise, Pelia is described as a highly educated engineer who suffers no fools. She’s also known for her ability to calmly and brusquely solve problems, thanks to her many years of experience. Paul Wesley, who is reprising his role as James T. Kirk, will also appear more regularly in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And according to showrunner Henry Alonso Myers, the younger version of the iconic character is “not yet the person who he is going to be” because he still has a lot of “stuff to figure out.”

Created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a direct prequel to The Original Series. Billed as a return to the classic planet-of-the-week space exploration format of the original, the story is set in the years before Kirk takes the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Instead, the series chronicles Captain Christopher Pike as he leads the U.S.S. Enterprise, as they explore new worlds throughout the galaxy. Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck reprise their roles as Pike, Number One, and Science Officer Spock respectively.

Additional crew members for the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds include Nurse Christine Chapel (played by Jess Bush), La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia). So far, the series has been a hit with fans, becoming an in-demand staple thanks to a passionate audience. It was renewed for a second outing in January, months before the debut of its first episode.

The first season finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds saw Captain Pike discovering that his tragic fate is a fixed point in time and that, should he try to change the course of his destiny, it will lead to Spock’s devastating demise. The last episode also saw the introduction of James T. Kirk, whose own destiny would be inevitably changed if Pike tried to alter his future. Once the Captain returned to his own timeline, he was met with a different tragedy as Number One was taken by Starfleet for being an Illyrian.

So there will definitely be some interesting stories to follow when the series returns. While there is no specific release date, season two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is expected to premiere Paramount+ in 2023. It will consist of ten episodes. The streamer also announced a February 2023 premiere for Picard.
