Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is starting to hit warp speed when it comes to the casting decisions around the rest of the Enterprise crew. We already knew some of the major players when it came to this new show, something of a spin-off of Discovery. And now we are rounding out the bridge crew who will join Pike, Spock, and Number One in their early trips across the cosmos. Let’s check out some of the new casting decisions just recently announced.
The new crew members are going to be Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush, and Melissa Navia. Their exact roles haven’t been outlined or specified yet. But we know the crew of the Enterprise is needed on the bridge with all kinds of decisions and intrigue to go along with the different characters. While none of them will be the *stars* of the show per se, it stands to reason more than a few plot arcs run through these folks over the course of the first season.
Most of this Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crew that was just added are up and coming in the Hollywood game. Olusanmokun and Chong both have credits on Black Mirror with the former appearing on The Defenders as well. Chong has also made appearances on Doctor Who. Gooding is a Tony-Nominated stage actress who starred in the production Jagged Little Pill on Broadway. Bush and Navia meanwhile are relatively new to the game with just minor parts here and there so far.
Strange New Worlds is a spin-off from Discovery and will reprise a few key roles from that show. Set in the time leading up to the original Star Trek series with Captain Kirk at the helm of the Enterprise, Anson Mount will play Captain Christopher Pike with Ethan Peck playing Spock and Rebecca Romijn playing Una or Number One, the ship’s second in command.
The show will be playing what was supposed to the be original Star Trek pilot which was rejected before the second iteration was picked up and vaulted the franchise into the zeitgeist. This is a chance to actually get a chance to see this original crew, the folks who would eventually hand over the Enterprise to the group who made it famous. Sure, Spock sticks around so maybe some of these new Strange New Worlds cast members will be others we know and love from the original. That remains to be seen.
Strange New Worlds is part of the increased expansion of the Star Trek universe and franchise on Paramount+. Joining Discovery and Picard as the streaming service’s staples, it’s set to begin rounding out additional stories and open up the universe even more. It joins other new shows like the animated Prodigy about a group of teens who take over a ship. That one will be geared toward a younger audience. This is such an exciting time for the Star Trek franchise with the stories only growing richer and deeper. Getting a rounded-out crew for the Enterprise just signals we are getting closer to seeing this on the screen. The show is set to debut in early 2022.
