FX has become one of the premier media companies, as most of the shows produced for the network end up being fantastic. One such show is The Americans, which ended four years ago. The show’s creators, Joe Wiseberg and Joel Fields are now back with a brand-new series called The Patient. This series will tackle the true crime genre in a much different way. Steve Carell stars as a morose therapist named Alan Strauss who must unravel the mind of a serial killer. You can see the trailer below:

Despite Steve Carell being known as a comedic actor, he can be an amazing serious actor as well. It has been some time since he appeared in something a bit more serious, and The Patient is certainly something far different than Carell has been in lately. The above trailer shows Alan Strauss attempting to come to terms with his wife dying and his estranged son. He then meets Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson), who kidnaps Alan, so that he may be cured of his need to kill. Alan must presumably find a way to cure Sam while also coming to terms with his own inability to run his life. The show is giving off some Dexter vibes, as Sam is a serial killer that wants to be helped. Carell’s character looks to be as complicated as the serial killer is.

The Patient stars Steve Carell as Alan Strauss, Domhnall Gleeson as Sam Fortner, Laura Niemi as Beth (Alan’s wife), Andrew Leeds as Ezra (Alan’s son), and David Alan Grier as Charlie (Alan’s therapist). In Alan’s attempt to cure Sam, he must reconnect with his own humanity, by recalling memories of therapy from sessions with Charlie. Yes, we know how crazy that already sounds. However, just based on the details about the show already given, it sounds like it’s going to be a drama-filled ride of epic proportions.

Steve Carell has been splitting his time between films and television shows lately. The Patient is far more removed from anything that he has done recently. His last show was Space Force, which was a riff on The Office but made fun of the real-life faction of the military that was created in the United States. Unfortunately, Netflix canceled Space Force after only two seasons. He was also a recurring character on the hit AppleTV series, The Morning Show. He also recently reprised his role as Gru in the prequel to the Despicable Me franchise, Minions: The Rise of Gru. However, now he is the leading man in a fictionalized true crime drama. We are excited to see it.

The Patient debuts on August 30th and the show is being billed as a limited series. The series will contain 10 episodes and air on FX and likely on FX on Hulu, which releases the following day. Steve Carell is a fantastic actor, and we are more than excited to see his performance alongside Domhnall Gleeson. Gleeson is also a fantastic actor, who held the title of General Hux in the most recent Star Wars trilogy. The Patient might end up being the best show of the year.
