Stephen King Horror Masterpiece On Max Chills To The Bone

By Britta DeVore | Published

It’s Stephen King’s world and we’re all just living in it. At least, that’s what it feels like lately. With Mike Flanagan and the star-studded cast of the feature-length adaptation of The Life of Chuck celebrating its world premiere last weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival and Salem’s Lot finally landing a premiere date on Max, Stephen King fans have it made in the shade. But, at the same time, there’s nothing quite like a classic which is why we’re thrilled to tell you that The Shining is now streaming on Max.

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining Is On Max

Yes, for those of us who have read the book on which the film was based, Stanley Kubrick’s take on The Shining isn’t really as classic as they come but it’s still worth a watch while it’s on Max. After all, it is the spooky season. The title has remained a steadfast classic in the genre for more than four decades, and with good reason. Even though Kubrick took several artistic liberties, his version of the story is perfectly spine-chilling, unsettling, and goosebump-inducing.

Watch Jack Nicholson Turn Into A Mad Man

In The Shining, Max subscribers can watch as Jack Nicholson’s character, Jack Torrance, slowly but surely begins to lose his mind after accepting the job as the caretaker during the winter season at the Overlook Hotel. The grandiose resort sits on top of the mountains in Colorado and is completely shuttered long before the first snowflake touches the ground. Far away from the rest of society, Jack, his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and their son Danny (Danny Torrance), are all by themselves inside the walls and many rooms of the imposing hotel.

The Perfect Movie For Spooky Season

A recovering alcoholic, Jack Torrance is a writer who hopes that his time away from the rest of the world will give him the push to finally finish his book. But the trio will soon realize they’re not fully alone at the Overlook as a sinister presence makes itself known thanks to Danny’s psychic abilities known as “the shine.” While the snow might not be piling up outside of your home quite yet, The Shining is the perfect movie to stream on Max as the air picks up in briskness and the leaves begin to change color.

Other Stephen King Favorites Streaming On Max

Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of the beloved Stephen King novel was the third of the author’s works to land an on-screen makeover. It was preceded by 1979’s Salem’s Lot and 1976’s Carrie which are both cinematic classics, with the former directed by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre helmer Tobe Hooper and the latter by Scarface’s Brian De Palma. The Shining is one of a handful of King adaptations that Max users can stream now with other titles including Pet Sematary, Firestarter, and The Outsider also available.

A True Classic

As for the mark that it left on American cinema, The Shining was inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library Congress back in 2018 due to its pop-culture significance. Whether it’s your first time or 100th time streaming The Shining on Max, there’s always another visual style or Easter egg that pops out on further watch-throughs.

At the box office, audiences were excited to see what the 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange director had vision-wise for the movie, with the title raking in $47.3 million against its $19 million budget.
Interested parties can now stream The Shining on Max before flipping over to Paramount+ for the movie’s sequel, the Mike Flanagan-helmed 2019 film, Doctor Sleep.
