Stephen King Fans Don’t Have Much Time To Watch The Boogeyman On Hulu
With the spooky season just lurking beyond the horizon, audiences can soon expect to see a slew of new horror titles arrive on their preferred streamer. At the same time, the end of the month signals a time of letting go as movies and shows will also bid adieu to various platforms. If you’re in the need for a chill and a thrill, tied with a literary genius, you’ll want to head to Hulu before September ends to stream The Boogeyman, an adaptation of the short story of the same name by Stephen King.
The Boogeyman
Directed by Rob Savage, The Boogeyman is one of the latest productions to come from the literary pages of Stephen King. Playing on grief and loss, the story follows a therapist named Will Harper, who has just lost his wife and the mother of their two children, Sadie and Sawyer. After a troubled client comes to Will for psychological treatment, a sinister entity locks onto the grieving family and refuses to let go.
Starring in the role of Will is Based on a True Story and The Mindy Project’s Chris Messina with up-and-coming actresses, Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) and Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird Box) appearing as Will’s daughters. Filling out the ensemble of The Boogeyman is horror legend David Dastmalchian, who will soon appear in another Stephen King adaptation alongside the star-studded call sheet for Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck.
Switched From Streaming To Cinema
A truly one-of-a-kind movie in this sense, The Boogeyman was initially intended for a direct-to-streamer release before the studio thought better of it and dropped the Stephen King adaptation in cinemas ahead of its arrival to Hulu.
This is the exact opposite of how things have been going down in the film industry recently, with an example being another upcoming on-screen telling of the author’s famous work, Salem’s Lot. Initially set for cinemas, the folks at Warner Bros. pulled it from a theatrical run and will instead send it straight to Max next month.
Box Office Earnings
Backed by the likes of Deadpool & Wolverine helmer Shawn Levy, the movie was the latest project of its kind on his credit list that also includes Stranger Things. At the global box office, The Boogeyman raked in $82.3 million against its $35 million budget, marking it as a solid Stephen King-based financial success. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds a 61 percent approval rating among critics.
More Stephen King Adaptations On The Way
As mentioned, beyond The Boogeyman, Stephen King has several other adaptations in the works at various studios. Along with The Life of Chuck which stars the likes of Tom Hiddleston, Karen Gillan, Kate Siegel, and more, and the Lewis Pullman-led Salem’s Lot, the author is also eyeing up an It prequel series titled Welcome to Derry as well as a Mike Flanagan-backed episodic retelling of The Dark Tower.
The Boogeyman Is Stephen King Approved
Those who know about his hatred for movies like Firestarter, The Shining, Graveyard Shift, and others may wonder where The Boogeyman falls on Stephen King’s adaptation meter. Not only did the iconic author love what Rob Savage did with his feature-length adaptation of his short story, but he pushed the studio to send it to cinemas – something that undoubtedly played into 20th Century Studios’ decision to do so. See what the hype is all about by catching the film before October 1 when it leaves Hulu.
