Stephen Amell Green Arrow Canceled Movie Comes To Light
With the DC Universe coming back in, possibly, full force around a new set of (mostly) new character castings and stories, there are always looks back at those who came before. And the question sometimes becomes who might make his or her way back into the DC mix. The big group often discussed are the ones from the Arrowverse and who could end up crossing over into the main event. Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow, among all, would seem a prime candidate.
A Green Arrow Movie?
But what about a Green Arrow movie? Was that every something actually considered by the studio and would Stephen Amell have been a part of a larger scale production around the character? On a recent Inside of You Podcast with Michael Rosenbaum, Stephen Amell came on to talk about the character’s past and potential future. He said that there was actually previous talk about a Green Arrow movie, but the studio didn’t move forward with the plans.
Studio Scared?
Asked why Warner Bros didn’t see fit to have Stephen Amell star in a Green Arrow movie, the actor didn’t get too far into the specifics, but did offer a bit of his opinion on the matter.
He said, “… it just got killed at the studio level from people that, I think, were making decisions…that were fear-based.”
What the fear around a Green Arrow movie might have been, we can’t say though we can, of course, speculate. For starters, going from a weekly series to a big-budget movie is, in and of itself, a massive undertaking and one that would have definitely meant more of a financial commitment.
Green Arrow Fans?
But beyond that, a Green Arrow movie with Stephen Amell in the starring role would have also required significant buy-in on the fan level as well.
After all, it’s one thing to star on The CW in the Arrowverse, it’s another to have the character in a big screen aspect, pointing to larger DC Universe shifting. One can understand why WB wouldn’t have wanted to make such a commitment at the time.
The Arrowverse Dead?
And it’s not like their fears were completely unfounded. After all, the DC Arrowverse franchise on The CW is all but dead now, anyway. For a while, things were going strong, but the various bigger ticket series like Supergirl and The Flash are over now as well, with nothing coming along to replace them.
Not wanting to push movie chips in for Stephen Amell and Green Arrow might have been the prudent decision anyway.
Arrow Started It All
Stephen Amell first appeared as Green Arrow in 2012 on The CW’s Arrow. The character was a darker and more brooding version than most fans were expecting, and the series ended up being a relative hit for the network. Amell was up for the task physically and as an actor.
The show helped pave the way for the rest of the Arrowverse and a set of interconnected stories that overlapped for about a decade on the small screen.
It ended up a massive win even if things have petered out of late. Will we ever see Stephen Amell return as Green Arrow? All things are likely in the comic book multiverse, but it I wouldn’t bet on it happening soon.
