The Greatest Detective Show Of All Time Is Getting A Female-Led Reboot
Starsky & Hutch is getting a reboot, but this time will follow two female detectives.
Fox, the network behind hit shows like The Simpsons and The Resident, is currently developing an update of the 1970s cop series Starsky & Hutch, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Unlike the original show, however, the remake will reportedly have a female-led cast. The network is developing the program via its script-to-series model, which means Fox executives will look at the show’s script and determine whether a series gets the go-ahead.
Although not much is known about the Starsky & Hutch remake due to it being in the early stages of development, Fox president Michael Thorn will reportedly receive at least two scripts from writers/showrunners Sam Sklaver and Elizabeth Peterson before giving the project an official greenlight. The two previously worked on the crime series Prodigal Son for the network.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Starsky & Hutch remake is one of several projects Fox is looking to develop. Jenny is a Weapon from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry is in the works. The network is also developing a medical drama titled Doc, which is based on an Italian show that centers on a doctor who loses her memory for eight years following a frightening accident.
Starsky & Hutch will reportedly be a modern “reimagining” centering on two female detectives, Sasha Starsky and Nicole Hutchinson. Although there’s no word on who will play the two leads, the series will follow the pair as they solve crimes in the offbeat town of Desert City. They maintain their friendship and their awesomeness while also attempting to unravel the mystery behind who sent their fathers to prison 15 years ago for a crime they didn’t commit.
Created by William Blinn, the original Starsky & Hutch series ran from 1975-79 on ABC. The Golden Globe-nominated program received generally positive reviews from both critics and everyday viewers alike over the course of its run. In addition to David Soul as Det. Ken ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson and Paul Michael Glaser as Det. Dave Starsky, the series stars Antonio Fargas, Bernie Hamilton, Eldon Burke, and Marki Bey.
While original show ran for just four seasons, it’s wildly regarded by fans as one of the best series of the detective genre. In fact, Warner Bros. successfully capitalized on the show’s popularity with its 2004 feature film adaptation Starsky & Hutch. The film went on to gross approximately $170 million globally, and it also inspired a 2003 video game bases on the series.
Directed by Todd Phillips (Joker, The Hangover), the motion picture is set in the 1970s in a metropolis known as Bay City, where Dave Starsky (Ben Stiller) and Ken ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson (Owen Wilson) patrol the crime-ridden streets. When the murdered body of a drug dealer is found on a local beach, the pair follows the clues to repeat offender Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn). But time and again the mismatched cops fail to apprehend the shifty Feldman, while under their noses he goes about planning his biggest trafficking operation yet.
The new Starsky & Hutch is series being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment. Since the project is still in the early stages of development, no release date has been announced at this time.
