Stargate Origins Free To Stream Right Now
The movie-length cut of the 2018 Stargate Origins 10-episode web series is available on Freevee, Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming service in the United States. It serves as a prequel to the original 1994 Stargate film and the subsequent television series Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe.
Stargate Origins, originally a web series, is now streaming on Freevee as a movie.
Set about a decade after the discovery of the Stargate in Egypt, Stargate Origins follows a young woman named Catherine Langford (Ellie Gall) who, along with her archaeologist father, becomes entangled with the Nazis just before World War II. The prequel series delves into Catherine’s early experiences with the Stargate and her attempts to use its time-traveling powers to save her father.
Stargate Origins begins in 1938, with Catherine and her father, Paul Langford, scrutinizing the Stargate in a storage facility near Giza. However, their exploration is abruptly interrupted when Wilhelm Brucke, a member of a Nazi group, and his team arrive and take them captive. Brucke reveals that he knows how to operate the Stargate and compels Paul to accompany them through the gate.
Elsewhere in Stargate Origins, Catherine manages to overpower her captor and get help from her friends, Captain James Beal and Wasif, an Egyptian serving in the British army. She persuades them to venture through the gate with her to rescue her father. Upon arrival, the group finds themselves in a desert temple on the distant planet of Abydos.
This world is under the dominion of Aset, a demi-god who had been resurrected by Ra but is now rebelling against him. In their new environment, they engage in a skirmish with Aset’s female guard, Serqet, before encountering a young native named Kasuf. Catherine tries to activate the Stargate to return home, but she lacks the correct combination of symbols on the dialing device.
Meanwhile, Brucke forms an alliance with Aset, offering to transport a valuable metal called Naquadah back to Earth in exchange for thousands of enslaved people to aid Aset’s fight against Ra. This alliance alienates the local tribe members and faithful servants of Aset, leading to a brutal showdown between one of them and Brucke’s soldier, Stefan, in a fight to the death.
While Stargate Origins aimed to explore the early history of the Stargate program, it received mixed reviews from fans and critics.
Catherine befriends the native tribespeople and is taken to a secret cave, where she discovers the symbols required to activate the Stargate. Stargate Origins ends with a showdown between the leading characters and their enemies before the Stargate sends Professor Langford and Catherine back to Earth.
Back on Earth, with no recollection of their experiences since before the arrival of the Nazis, Langford and Catherine conclude their investigation of the Stargate, which is now under U.S. control. As Stargate Origins ends, Catherine ponders the mysterious metal in her possession and anticipates future encounters with the Stargate.
It’s worth noting that Stargate Origins was never released in physical format, and the Stargate Command streaming platform ceased operations in 2019.
Connor Trinneer co-stars as Catherine’s father, Professor Paul Langford, in Stargate Origins. The rest of the cast includes newcomers such as Philip Alexander, Shvan Aladdin, Daniel Rashid (playing a young Kasuf), Salome Azizi, and Aylam Orian. The series was distributed on the streaming service Stargate Command, which was created specifically for Stargate-related content.
While Stargate Origins aimed to explore the early history of the Stargate program, it received mixed reviews from fans and critics. Many viewers appreciated the opportunity to delve deeper into the Stargate mythology. Others were disappointed by the series’ 10-minute episode length and budget constraints, which limited its ability to explore the universe fully.
It’s worth noting that Stargate Origins was never released in physical format, and the Stargate Command streaming platform ceased operations in 2019. As a result, the feature-length version of Origins remained available only for purchase on digital platforms. MGM initially had plans to continue exploring the stories of various characters in the Stargate universe with additional web series.
However, the studio changed course as time went by and decided to collaborate with the original Stargate television producer, Brad Wright, on a completely different project. This move leaves the low-budget Stargate Origins (also known as Stargate Origins: Catherine) as something of an unusual chapter in the history of the Stargate franchise.
Still, it’s heartening to see that the movie-length cut of Stargate Origins is now accessible on Freevee, giving both loyal fans and newcomers a chance to revisit this exciting prequel adventure.
