Stargate fans around the world might be buzzing, as it has now been announced that all three of the shows have now returned to streaming. Amazon effectively acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 2021, and that deal has been finalized. MGM owned the rights to the Stargate franchise, leaving Amazon with ownership of everything under the MGM banner. Now, all ten seasons of Stargate SG-1, five seasons of Stargate Atlantis, and two seasons of Stargate Universe have been brought back to stream on Amazon Prime Video. With Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, it could mean that Stargate will stay put for a lot longer this time around.
Stargate has not been available to stream on Amazon Prime Video since February of 2021, but that has now been rectified. What makes this much more exciting, is that Amazon also has the truest form of each series. The episodes will all be 16:9 widescreen episodes and have been upgraded to at least 720p resolution. Netflix had the older episodes in the 4:3 ratio, and all were listed as TV-MA for nudity, though only the first episode contains nudity. This mature designation likely made it a lot harder for fans to find the episodes on the streaming platform. Hulu also had the version of Atlantis that contained the annoying hard act commercial breaks. There has not been an AD-free version of Universe available, but now it is.
Although Stargate has brought back its three different shows, SG-1‘s two movies are not available to watch for free just yet. With the acquisition of MGM, fans might still be able to watch The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum for free in the future. They can both be rented on Amazon Prime Video for $3.99 currently. Still, there are now hundreds of episodes of unedited Stargate that fans can watch right now on Amazon. That is massive news for those who have been dealing with ads, the dreaded 4:3 ratio, and horrid act breaks.
Although the licensing for Stargate SG-1 is set to hit the one-year mark in November on Netflix, the streaming platform might see fit to just stop streaming the series. With Amazon bringing the better ratio and taking off the ridiculous mature rating, Netflix might just want to release their licensing of the show. Amazon buying MGM could mean they are going to pull licensing from other streaming platforms, and just become the hub for Stargate. Should the Stargate revival happen soon, it might land on Amazon as well. The science fiction series has a massive number of fans, and Amazon would be smart to keep itself as the only place to stream the franchise.
Fans of Stargate can now watch all three shows on Amazon Prime Video. We are not sure when the pilot movies are going to be made available for free through a subscription to Prime Video, but that might happen soon. Also, we did report a Stargate revival happening sometime soon, so fans might want to subscribe to Prime Video now, to catch up on all the episodes they may have missed through the years.
