Star Wars Has Zombies Now Thanks To Ahsoka, And We Called It Ahead Of Time

Who had “Star Wars crossing over with Night of the Living Dead” on their 2023 Bingo card? Oh, that’s right, us at Giant Freakin Robot. In an article last month about the Ahsoka character Captian Enoch and his legion of Night Troopers, the good folks at Giant Freakin Robot predicted that the galaxy would soon get its own form of Star Wars zombies, and the Ahsoka finale proved us right.

We had made an educated guess based on the attire of Thrawn’s soldiers—scraps of red cloth like the Nightsisters wear woven throughout their Stormtrooper armor—that the newly christened “Night Troopers” would turn out to be Star Wars zombies reanimated through the dark magic practiced by the Nightsisters.

In the Ahsoka finale Star Wars zombies were introduced into the galaxy

That Star Wars zombies guess became fact during the Ahsoka finale when Ahsoka, Ezra, and Sabine succeeded in killing all of the Night Troopers, only to have something peculiar happen. Only moments after the Troopers shuffled off this mortal coil, their battered and broken bodies rose up off of the floor and continued to fight as Star Wars zombies.

Not only did we predict that Ahsoka would introduce Star Wars to the joys of zombie carnage, but we even predicted how it would happen! As the dead Night Troopers started moving around unnaturally, they were imbued with a green mist exactly like the kind the Nightsisters use to bring the dead back to life. The mist even lit up the eye lenses of the Night Trooper’s helmets, making them look extra spooky.

Being right about the Night Sisters making a deal with Thrawn to reanimate his dead troops into Star Wars zombies has led us to confidently double down on the other prediction we made regarding the mysterious cargo being loaded into Grand Admiral Thrawn’s star destroyer, The Chimaera.

In our previous article, we said that the cargo being placed in Thrawn’s ship were most likely corpses for the Imperial leader to bring back to the main Star Wars galaxy and turn into an army of zombie soldiers to help him defeat the New Republic.

After the Ahsoka finale, we are sticking by our assumption—and not only because a shot of The Chimaera’s cargo hold showed what looked like hundreds, if not thousands, of coffin-sized containers.

In the original Heir to the Empire series of novels, one of Thrawn’s plans involves finding a set of cloning cylinders in the Emperor’s secret storage unit and creating an army of clones to use in the fight against the New Republic. The book was written before Lucasfilm established what the Clone Wars were and contradicted some of the things Timothy Zahn came up with.

If Ahsoka is leading toward Dave Filoni doing his own version of Heir to the Empire—which, according to our internal Magic 8-Ball, all signs point to yes—then what better way to replace the part of the story involving a clone army with an army of Star Wars brand zombies instead?

In both Legends and presumably the current canon, the New Republic isn’t too worried about the Imperial remnant because their diminished numbers don’t pose a real threat to the galaxy. To prove them wrong, Thrawn needs a way to amass a huge army and replenish the Empire’s forces as quickly as possible.

Clones or zombies—the method doesn’t matter, just the results, and judging by the Ahsoka finale, the Star Wars version of zombies gets results!
