The Star Wars universe has been abuzz recently, with The Mandalorian’s third season currently airing and news about future Lucasfilm projects dropping frequently. Now, there’s a buzz in the galaxy far, far away that Oscar-winning talent could be joining the franchise. According to an article from the Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will feature an episode directed by none other than The Daniels, known for their work on Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The Daniels are a filmmaking duo comprising Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. After the news first broke that they were somehow involved in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Kwan corroborated the story in an Instagram story that read, “We love Jon, we love Star Wars, love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew, and we needed the days to keep our healthcare (!!!), so it was an easy yes.” It was later confirmed that The Daniels directed one Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode.

Prior to their upcoming work for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, The Daniels got their start directing music videos, including DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s trap banger “Turn Down for What.” Most viewers probably know them for their recent multiversal mega-hit Everything Everywhere All at Once, released through A24. They also directed the Daniel Radcliffe-led film Swiss Army Man and received directing credits for the Awkwafina-led Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.

The Daniels are fresh off of winning big at the Oscars for Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film won a total of seven Academy Awards, including best original screenplay, best director, best actress (Michelle Yeoh), best-supporting actor (Ke Huy Quan), best-supporting actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), and best editing (Paul Rogers). Their award-winning pedigree should lend itself to a strong directorial performance with Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

The Star Wars: Skeleton Crew reveal may be a way of ramping up excitement for the upcoming Star Wars Celebration in London early this April. Fans can expect several other upcoming Lucasfilm projects to drop announcements as the Star Wars galaxy is slated for expansion. With series like the currently airing The Mandalorian and recently-aired The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as the upcoming Ahsoka debuting this year, there are tons of projects that already have fans excited for the future of the franchise.

It could be that fans will get more information about Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, including more cast reveals and an official release date. The Disney+ series was originally announced in May 2022 and will feature Jude Law in a starring role. Filming officially wrapped on January 22, 2023, although much else has been kept secret about the series.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’s premise is relatively vague, and all that has been revealed so far is that it revolves around a group of kids lost in the galaxy trying to find their way home. Fans do know that the series will take place during the New Republic, coinciding with the Mandalorian and the upcoming Ahsoka starring Rosario Dawson.

The series was written by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford. Watts also serves as an executive producer alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Jon Favreau, and Dave Filoni. Watts may best be known for directing Spider-Man: Homecoming for the MCU and the subsequent Tom Holland Spider-Man films.

As more information comes out about Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, fans will get a broader picture of how the series will look. With directorial talent like The Daniels at the helm, the series could be Star Wars’ next big hit series.
