Star Wars Fan-Favorite Series Done After One Season
The Star Wars franchise has a lot of new and ongoing projects in the works, but it looks like another season of Obi-Wan Kenobi isn’t in the cards. While a second season of the show was never guaranteed, as Disney’s recent announcement of home video releases for Disney+ shows had some disappointing language.
Obi-Wan Kenobi, Complete Series
While shows like Andor, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Moon Knight are listed as “The Complete First Season” in the announcement, the Obi-Wan series is listed as “The Complete Series.”
This is just a marketing announcement, but it does seem like a very intentional label for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. It’s always possible that Disney could choose to release a new season at some point, but this makes it seem like that season wouldn’t come anytime soon.
No More Obi-Wan Kenobi?
The series was far from perfect, and the reaction was mixed from Star Wars fans. But there is certainly a good portion of the fanbase that would have welcomed another season of Ewan McGregor’s adventures as Kenobi between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Story
Obi-Wan Kenobi starred Ewan McGregor as the titular exiled Jedi as he passed his days on the planet of Tatooine while also keeping an eye on the young Luke Skywalker.
But, a plot involving Leia Organa’s kidnapping causes Kenobi to come out of hiding, leading him to cross paths with Darth Vader, aka his former Padawan and brother-in-arms, Anakin Skywalker.
Hayden Christensen Returned
Much to the delight of fans, the show also featured Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin for flashbacks while also donning the Vader suit for the present day scenes.
But, as mentioned, fan reactions to Obi-Wan Kenobi were mixed, with many wondering if the series was needed in the first place.
With that being said, the thrill of seeing Obi-Wan Kenobi face off with Darth Vader/Anakin again was undeniable, and the relationship between these two former friends turned enemies was a highlight of the season.
Ewan McGregor Would Return?
If a second season could find a way to capitalize on the best aspects of the first season, fans would have likely shown up in droves to watch more.
Both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen expressed their interest in reprising their roles, so the pieces are in place for a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi. But, the lack of an official announcement and this recent “Complete Series” release makes it seem like a second season isn’t part of the Star Wars plan for the time being.
More Star Wars Coming
Fortunately, there are plenty of other Star Wars projects coming up that fans are looking forward to.
While there won’t be any new Obi-Wan Kenobi this year, the animated show The Bad Batch will be finishing its final season this year, with the first five episodes already available to stream.
We will also get a second season of the animated anthology series Tales of the Jedi. New shows will also air their debut seasons, with The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew both scheduled for a 2024 release.
