It’s a sad day for Star Wars fans as Michael Culver, who acted in one of the franchise’s most iconic moments has passed away. The 85-year-old actor passed away on February 27, 2024, with no cause of death provided to the public. With over 50 years of acting under his belt, Culver brought his characters to life on both stage and screen.
Michael Culver As Captain Needa
Perhaps Michael Culver’s most iconic moment in pop culture was his role as Captain Needa, a small but nonetheless well-known character.
In The Empire Strikes Back, Captain Needa was the unfortunate Imperial officer who failed Darth Vader and was subsequently force-choked to death.
It’s one of the most iconic scenes in one of the most iconic films of all time, so it’s no surprise that many people still associate Michael Culver primarily with that scene decades later.

Many in the UK will also know Michael Culver for his roles on television. He had recurring roles on shows like The Adventures of Black Beauty, where he played Squire Armstrong, Secret Army where he played Major Erwin Brandt, and The House of Elliot, where he played Ralph Saroyan.
In addition, he was a frequent guest star on shows like The Return of Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, The Professionals, and The Sweeney.
