Star Wars: Lando Is Now A Movie?

Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian

Stephen Glover let the proverbial cat out of the bag when he announced on an episode of the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast that the newest Star Wars addition would be a movie centering around the suave character Lando Calrissian. As confirmed by Variety, the widely talked-about creation of a new addition to the Star Wars universe will be a full-length film rather than a show.

The long-in-development Star Wars Lando series on Disney+ is now, according to Donald Glover’s brother, Stephen, going to become a movie.

Initially linked to writer Justin Simien when the news first broke of a Lando creation in the works in 2020, the original idea was to make a streaming series featuring the galaxy’s biggest con man. However, Disney+ and Lucasfilm have now replaced Simien with Stephen and Donald Glover as writers of the piece, and the brothers have decided it will be a movie rather than a series.

Donald Glover seems like a perfect addition to the creation of the movie, as he was already attached as the star of the series. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) didn’t do well at the box office, but Glover reported that playing Lando Calrissian on screen was quite enjoyable.

If you’re not familiar with the character of Lando Calrissian, he made his first appearance in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) as a long-time friend of Hans Solo. He used to make a living as a gambler and con artist. In fact, he used to be the owner of the Millennium Falcon but lost the ship in a bet with Solo.

Donald Glover made his debut in the Star Wars universe as a young Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Though Calrissian is portrayed as a smooth-talking playboy, he proves to be a much more valuable asset when he steps up as a leader in the fight against the Empire. He is able to think on his toes and exudes great bravery, making him an invaluable addition to the ongoing struggles in the universe.

The Glover Brothers haven’t dropped too much information regarding the upcoming Lando movie due to the continuing writer strikes. During Stephen Glover’s spot on the aforementioned podcast, he claimed that information regarding the film is kind of like playing a game of “telephone” right now. The details of the flick are scattered and uncertain.

The ongoing WGA (Writer’s Guild of America) and SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actor’s Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) strikes have also prevented Disney and LucasFilms from forwarding any deal negotiations with Stephen and Donald Glover. The strikes are presenting a huge roadblock for the progression of Lando, whether as a movie or a series.

Due to the ongoing writer’s strike, any news on the future of Star Wars, including Lando, could change at a moment’s notice.

The best thing fans can do for now is to watch out for new information. Hollywood is finding ways to navigate and hammer out new paths for creating fresh film content, and the strikes can’t last forever. Eventually, agreements will be made.

Until then, there is no shortage of Star Wars movies and shows to binge streaming on Disney+. If you can’t watch the Lando movie, you can certainly watch Lando Calrissian in action via his other action-packed performances. The character makes an appearance in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
