Star Wars: Andor Season 2 has finally wrapped up filming but still lacks a precise release date—the series is expected to arrive on Disney’s streaming service sometime this year or early 2025. Actor Diego Luna, who stars as the titular character, recently shared that Andor Season 2 is cramming a ton of material before its finale concludes the entire series.

The End Of Andor’s Story

This also means that Andor won’t receive a third season, which is odd, considering that the series was initially conceived as a multi-season series with outlines up to Season 5. Instead, Disney is going to launch Andor Season 2 and have it conclude the entire series, with plenty of crucial material from planned future seasons crammed into an upcoming one. The reason for such action is time; apparently, the Star Wars television series consumes a considerable amount of time, especially in the case of the narrative that leads to Rogue One.

Years In Development

For context, Star Wars: Andor was initially greenlit in 2018 and planned for a 2019 filming window, but the project was marred by pre-production issues and the COVID-19 pandemic. The crew and cast managed to film the first season during the pandemic, but safety protocols severely affected the workflow, which, in turn, delayed the series.

It’s not the only release that was affected. Still, it’s enough to question the financial viability of a project, considering that filming Season 1 took a year and a half to complete. Season 2 apparently took the same amount of time due to Hollywood strikes.

Closing The Loop

So, it’s quite evident that time isn’t the only reason why we’re not getting anything past Andor Season 2; Tony Gilroy, the creator and showrunner, also added that a five-season plan was deemed physically impossible due to the series’ scale. This led to the realization that Disney could end the series with Andor Season 2 and lead directly into the events of Rogue One instead of taking whole five seasons of delicious content to do so.

Three Story Arcs Remaining

Thus, the consolidated material from seasons two through five will be spread across Andor Season 2’s 12 episodes. This means that the upcoming season will have four three-episode story arcs, each created by a different director and lead writer.

Now, for those who consider Disney’s decision unreasonable, each new season of Andor takes approximately three years to produce and release. Assuming that Andor Season 2 releases in 2025 and that the showrunners had three more seasons to produce, Andor won’t conclude its narrative until 2034.

Leaving On Its Own Terms

That’s nine years into the future, a time at which Diego Luna, Andor‘s lead, would turn 54, filming the narrative sequence that takes place moments before Rogue One, a release which he filmed when he was 36 years old. And yes, while digital de-aging and actors’ likeness and all that stuff is fun and dandy, actors already rebelled against such practices, especially against Disney.

After all is said and done, there might be a bright side to this news—it’s always better to leave the dance floor gracefully at the height of your fame than to overstay your welcome.
