Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Crossing Over With The Next Generation?
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount and Ethan Peck want their show to cross over with The Next Generation.
With Star Trek: Picard finishing its final season, fans of the much-beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation find themselves without anything tailored specifically to their tastes. However, that may change if the actors of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds get their way. According to SlashFilm, the co-leads of the Star Trek: Discovery spin-off both want to do a crossover with The Next Generation.
In an interview, both Anson Mount (who plays Captain Christopher Pike) and Ethan Peck (who plays Spock) were asked what their most-desired Star Trek crossover would be. In response, both stars said that they want Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to cross over with TNG. However, both stars have different reasons for wanting this crossover.
Ethan Peck would love the crossover because of the time he’s spent working with Jonathan Frakes, who portrayed Will Riker in both The Next Generation and Picard. While the two haven’t acted together, Frakes was chosen as a director for an episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Peck also mentioned his love for Brent Spiner, who played his favorite Star Trek character: Data.
Anson Mount has an even more personal reason for wanting Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to cross over with The Next Generation. According to Mount, he had met Patrick Stewart when he was 22 years old through a mutual friend — a friend who died before Mount ever got a role in a Star Trek series. Mount says that, while it’s sad that the friend isn’t there to see them be part of the same franchise, it’d be the icing on the cake if they managed to both appear on the same show together.
The possibility of a crossover with The Next Generation does pose a fairly significant problem, however. Namely, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes place a decade before the original Star Trek series — and more than a century before the time period TNG is set in. A crossover would require some sort of time travel shenanigans — though Star Trek has no shortage of canonical ways to make that happen.
This speculation comes not long after a teaser for season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds hinted at a different crossover event. The trailer includes a brief moment that appears to show live-action versions of characters Brad Boimler and Becket Mariner from the animated TV series Star Trek: Lower Decks. While the characters aren’t named in the trailer, they do look (and from what we can tell, act) similarly to their animated counterparts, wearing uniforms that match those seen in the animated series.
Considering the fact that Star Trek: The Lower Decks also takes place more than a century after Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a crossover with the animated series would demonstrate that the show’s creators are willing to bend spacetime in order to give fans something they want. So, while a crossover with The Next Generation might seem implausible, it’s certainly within the realm of possibility.
