Star Trek continues to expand its offerings, finding a home on Paramount that has helped bring all kinds of new productions to the forefront. For fans, it’s been something of a mixed bag with how they’ve gone about different stories and what’s happened with certain characters. One of the next shows to hit the Paramount+ streamer will be Strange New Worlds, bringing back Anson Mount as Christopher Pike. But we also got a look at another major character who will part of the series, someone with a, well, long history in the Star Trek universe. That’s right, we have a new Captain Kirk and the show gave us the much-anticipated update on Tuesday.

The news around the new Captain James T. Kirk came from Paramount (via Comicbook.com) and Paul Wesley will take on the role for the series. His previous work has included The Vampire Diaries and Tell Me A Story. This will be, arguably, his biggest role yet, taking on one of the most iconic characters in television and movie history. Someone fans have always had a scrutinizing eye towards. It makes sense considering following in Willaims Shatner’s (and Chris Pine’s, but not really) wake is never an easy thing. Check out the first look at Paul Wesley in the role as Captain Kirk. Does he look the part?

While it’s not totally clear just how big of a role Paul Wesley as Captain Kirk will have in the series, it’s great to see they are already preparing for this part of the story. It makes total sense in the context of the timing and where Captain Pike falls in terms of helming the Enterprise. This is all set about 10 years before the events of the original Star Trek series and will follow along with the group we originally met in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery. The main cabin crew for the ship will include the aforementioned Mount as Pike as well as Rebecca Romjin as Number One, and Ethan Peck as Spock

If it gets confusing keeping track of the different characters at this point, not to worry because that’s just the state of the television world when a franchise really goes into expansion mode. We are going to see concurrent versions of the Enterprise folks considering that the Kelvin crew is set to re-up another movie in the Star Trek movie world with Chris Pine getting back in the Captain Kirk role once again.

When can we expect this new Captain Kirk in Strange New Worlds? Well, that’s a bit fuzzier. The show from Star Trek alums Akiva Goldsman and Alex Kurtzman is set to hit Paramount+ on May 5th. But this picture is from the filming of the second season which just got underway back in February. That means we will likely have to go through the first run of stories before he finally hits the small screen. Let’s hope it is worth the wait with expectations around this new series pretty high among the Star Trek faithful.
