See The New Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Set
Variety’s massive feature for the future of Star Trek has given fans a lot to chew on, along with some sneak peeks of the upcoming season of Strange New Worlds. The third season of the series is still in production, but the article did include a really cool look at one of the new sets. The behind-the-scenes image shows Ethan Peck’s Spock working in a science lab on the USS Enterprise, which is described as “a transparent floor atop a four-foot pool of water that swirls underneath the central workbench, and the surrounding walls sport a half dozen viewscreens with live schematics custom designed by a six-person team.”
Spock Hard At Work
The image also reveals that Spock is studying a Chimera Blossom. It’s safe to say that this is definitely one of the coolest-looking Star Trek sets in recent memory. Especially when you learn about the unique behind-the-scenes details about the set.
Working With New Technology
According to the Variety feature, the pathway behind the virtual Augmented Reality (AR) wall has posters from the Star Trek: The Next Generation holodeck. Anson Mount, who plays Captain Pike in Strange New Worlds, revealed that working with the AR wall can be a bit dizzying, saying you have to “focus on something that’s right in front of you so you don’t fall down.” But Peck has a different approach to the wall, saying, “I don’t really get disoriented by it,” and “Spock would not get ill, so I’m Method acting.”
Riker’s Best
In addition to this awesome new set, we also learned a little bit more about the episode Jonathan Frakes is directing for Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Apparently, the episode is going to be a murder mystery, with Frakes building up hype saying it’s “the best episode of television I’ve ever done.” Frakes has directed numerous episodes of shows like The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and more, so that’s definitely a high bar.
Those Old Scientists
Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds also saw the incredible crossover with the animated comedy Lower Decks, and fans are definitely hoping for more big swings like this from the show in the future. Frakes actually directed that episode, and it was considered one of the best of the season, so it won’t be surprising if his murder-mystery episode reaches those same heights. In any case, we’ll likely have to wait until 2025 to see the show anyway, as filming is expected to wrap up for the season in May.
Section 31
In the meantime, the Variety feature promised that fans have a lot more to look forward to in the Star Trek universe. For one, we have the upcoming Section 31 streaming movie that will star Michelle Yeoh reprising her role from Discovery. The film will give us a story that follows Yeoh’s character in Starfleet’s secret division, and it sounds like it’s going to be a pretty thrilling ride.
Star Trek 4
Fans also got the good news that the Star Trek 4 film set in the Kelvin timeline is apparently still in the process of being made. It’s currently undergoing another script rewrite, but at least it’s still on the docket. While we wait for that, Discovery is set to return on April 4, so make sure to tune in to see the start of the fifth and final season of that series.
