Star Trek: Picard Follow-Up Not In Development, Patrick Stewart To Blame?

After three seasons on air, the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Picard came to an end last year, marking the final (for now) space adventures for Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard. We say “for now” because even as things were ending for the Star Trek series, there were talks of a spin-off that was possibly in the works.

But, Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas has the bigger picture in mind, and perhaps Patrick Stewart is to blame.

Star Trek: Picard Spin-Off Not Happening?

Appearing alongside a handful of other Star Trek: Picard alum, Matalas crushed the fandom’s hopes of receiving a specifically Picard spin-off, instead sharing his thoughts on what a separate series from the vast Star Trek universe could look like.

With his comments coming just days after Patrick Stewart said that he’d be game to jump back into the role of the legendary USS Enterprise Captain, could something be brewing between the two?

No Need For More Picard

While Matalas didn’t mention anything about a big-screen, feature-length project, he did say that plenty of stories were left to tell in series form, just not centered around those already touched in Star Trek: Picard. One of those tales that jumped out to Matalas would be focused on Michael Dorn’s Klingon, Worf, and the Klingon Empire.

However, the Picard showrunner also mentioned that he doesn’t think audiences “really need to fully say goodbye to any of these characters,” filling us with hope that Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and the rest of the team could be together again.

Also A Next Generation Goodbye?

Making it clear that, although it was set up for one, there would be no Star Trek: Picard spin-off, Matalas said that the way the series wrapped up was not only perfect for that individual title but also for Star Trek: The Next Generation.

With the final moments of Picard not featuring Patrick Stewart or any of the other The Next Generation cast but instead, the next lineup of younger explorers, he called it a full circle moment, adding that it “just felt like a proper ending.”

Jean-Luc Picard Movie?

On the other side, Star Trek: Picard’s Patrick Stewart stirred the rumor pot with comments surrounding an unnamed project that would be a feature-length film about Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

While he didn’t name who the screenplay’s scribe was, he did say that it was crafted with him in mind to reprise his role. He said that it would be on its way to him “within a week or so,” adding that he was “so excited” to get his hands on it and see what could be done.

Need Patrick Stewart Involved

If there ever was hope of having a Star Trek: Picard spin-off, it would be pretty impossible to do it without Patrick Stewart being somehow involved.

After all, his character’s name is in the title. If that were to be changed, it would be a completely separate spin-off, perhaps involving one of the new crew members we met during the show’s three seasons.

Likely Ending

As of right now, it seems likely that the Season 3 finale of Star Trek: Picard is exactly where we’re going to leave things, with the literal next generation taking over the reins and continuing their space exploration.

In the meantime, it also appears as though the wheels are already turning on new projects to come from Terry Matalas that would shed light on different characters from the universe and possibly even a Patrick Stewart-led movie. Stay tuned for any and all updates.
