Star Trek: Picard Season 3’s premiere is only a few weeks away, and Paramount+ dropped a final trailer for the show’s final season. Along with new looks at some of the characters we already knew would be a part of the season — in particular a couple of interesting moments with Brent Spiner‘s Lore — the trailer revealed two new and as of yet unnamed characters: one played by Todd Stashwick (12 Monkeys) and another by Ed Speleers (Downton Abbey). You can watch the trailer below.

The first mystery character shows up about 15 seconds into the trailer, played by Stashwick. His character isn’t as big of a mystery because while we don’t yet know his name, back in September TrekCentral reported they’d learned Stashwick had joined the series as the captain of the U.S.S. Titan-A. In the clip, Stashwick’s character does seem to be eating with Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Riker (Jonathan Frakes) in his private dining room, which is exactly the kind of courtesy you’d expect a Captain to extend toward a visit Admiral and Captain.

The other newly revealed Star Trek: Picard character, played by Speleer, raises some more questions. The first time we see him, he has a weapon to Riker. Later he appears to be arguing with someone off camera, challenging them with, “Is anybody you know still the person you knew?”

It’s difficult to get past the most obvious guess when it comes to Speleer — that in Star Trek: Picard‘s final season we will learn the titular hero has a son, perhaps with Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), and that Speleer is playing him. The way Speleer’s two moments in the trailer interact with one another have a very Kirk-Meets-David vibe circa Star Trek: II: The Wrath of Khan.

Brent Spiner as Lore in the Star Trek: Picard Season 3 final trailer

Along with the new characters, we get a little bit more time with Data’s evil twin Lore (Brent Spiner) in the final Star Trek: Picard Season 3 trailer. While he doesn’t necessarily reveal any secrets, he does say something interesting. To someone off-screen, Lore says, “Survival. It’s human nature, pal.”

It’s possible Lore’s comment has something to do with explaining why he’s aged in appearance in Star Trek: Picard Season 3 (beyond the obvious — because Spiner has aged). In the Star Trek: The Next Generation series finale it’s revealed that Data and Lore have the ability to age their appearance if they wish. Perhaps we will learn that Lore willingly aged himself in order to go unnoticed among humans, i.e. for survival.

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard premieres on Paramount+ on Thursday, February 16. Almost the entire lead cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation will appear in the season, including Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, and Marina Sirtis.
