Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 is on its way to Paramount Plus later this year. The first two seasons have breathed comic life into the Trek franchise and the animated show has become a critical hit. Now, in anticipation of the upcoming third season, Paramount has shared a teaser trailer

The teaser trailer doesn’t give away too much in terms of visuals, instead focusing more on a voiceover. The Season 2 finale is brought to bear once again where the USS Cerritos captain Carol Freeman was arrested by the Federation for causing the destruction of the Pakled Planet. In the teaser, the Lower Decks Crew of the Cerritos discusses a plan to save their captain, before revealing they plan to steal the Cerritos itself. Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), Ensign Tendi (Noël Wells), and Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) can all be heard in the teaser, thus marking their return to the beloved Star Trek show.

Star Trek: Lower Decks comes from the comic genius mind of Rick and Morty’s Mike McMahan. McMahan shares show running duties with Heather Kadin. The showrunners also take executive producing duties with Alex Kurtzman, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, and Katie Krentz. The show’s first two seasons have been a great success, culminating in the second season not only getting a glowing review from GIANT FREAKIN ROBOT but unanimous critical approval proved by a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is one of several Star Trek series that currently air across television and streaming. Star Trek has enjoyed a renaissance in the 21st Century, with the J. J. Abrams film trilogy that began in 2009 catalyzing series such as Star Trek Discovery, Star Trek: Prodigy & Star Trek: Picard, the latter of which is set to get a film adaption, not only that but J. J. Abrams’ continuity of Star Trek films is set to get a fourth installment. As well as this, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to air on Paramount Plus in May, a prequel series that will follow James T. Kirk and crew in the days leading up to the original Star Trek television series. With so many series and films abound in the Star Trek universe, it is amazing that each can offer its take and/or niche. In the case of Star Trek: Lower Decks, that is found in focussing on the Federation crew members on levels below the Captain’s bridge, shining the spotlight on characters that merely serve as background in mainstream Star Trek media.

Star Trek: Lower Decks may be niche in its presentation and comedic focus, but it is seen as showcasing the best of Star Trek of yesteryearLower Decks season three, like Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds & the upcoming Star Trek 4 all look to successfully continue the Star Trek legacy that began all the way back in 1966. This makes it one of the most enduring franchises in media history and fans of Star Trek: Lower Decks will be eager to see how season three will extend the franchise’s narrative.
