Star Trek: Legacy Stall Explained By Alex Kurtzman
There are quite a few big Star Trek projects in the pipeline right now, but the possibility of the teased Picard follow-up Star Trek: Legacy is apparently still in limbo. Alex Kurztman, who currently helms Paramount’s growing Trek TV universe, recently told Den of Geek that this decision isn’t really in his hands. Kurtzman said, “”If I had a magic button, a magic ‘greenlight button,’ for Star Trek: Legacy, and it was all on me, I’d push that button today,” adding, “Right now, it’s beyond my paygrade.”
It Could Still Happen
In other words, it seems like there’s plenty of people who want Star Trek: Legacy to happen, even Alex Kurtzman, but things aren’t that simple. While Kurtzman undoubtedly has a lot of pull in Trek TV-related decisions and can suggest things he thinks should happen, it’s ultimately the studio’s call. Fortunately, a recent interview that CBS president George Cheeks had with Vulture indicates that it isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
Cheeks told Vulture “We don’t want to offer up all these amazing premium drama series at once,” adding “Luckily, we have this incredible partner in Alex Kurtzman, and we all work together to sort of manage long-range planning across many years, to figure out what’s the right cadence for dropping new Star Trek series.”
A Matter Of Time?
So, it’s likely a matter of trying to create some separation from the potential Star Trek: Legacy and other upcoming shows, so the Trek TV series don’t cannibalize themselves and take viewers away from each other. It makes sense in that respect, but that doesn’t mean fans don’t want it to come sooner than later.
This is especially the case after the third and final season of Picard was so well-received. With that fantastic season still fresh on everyone’s minds, fans were hoping that they would strike while the iron is hot and green light Star Trek: Legacy as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it seems like we’ll have to wait.
Maybe We’ll Discover More After Discovery?
At the very least, we probably won’t hear anything new about Star Trek: Legacy until after the upcoming fifth and final season of Discovery. That series is set to drop a two-episode premiere on April 4, so it’s unlikely that a new series would get greenlit while the marketing efforts are focused on that show. Plus, there’s the other Trek projects that are coming down the pipeline.
Lots Of Trek On The Way
For one, we have a new season of Strange New Worlds to look forward to, along with the upcoming Section 31 movie that stars Michelle Yeoh. The animated shows Prodigy and Lower Decks are also set to return in the near future, along with the new YA show Starfleet Academy. Plus, there’s the fact that the Star Trek 4 Kelvin timeline film is apparently still in the works, along with a mysterious “origin story” film.
We May Have A Bit To Wait
With all of these projects lined up, it could be a long time before we hear anything about Star Trek: Legacy. Still, Trek fans are undoubtedly some of the most passionate and vocal fanbases out there, so there’s a chance that Paramount could give the show the green light sooner than expected. In the meantime, you can stream all of the seasons of Picard on Paramount+ and look forward to the season five premiere of Discovery on April 4.
