Star Trek: Legacy’s Fate Revealed, And It Doesn’t Look Good
There are no plans for Star Trek: Legacy to become a reality anytime soon.
With the end of Star Trek: Picard looming on the horizon, fans are wondering what will become of the finally reunited gang from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Although the rumor mill was churning with whispers of a spinoff series titled Star Trek: Legacy, showrunner Terry Matalas has revealed that, as of right now, nothing is in development. Speaking with Screen Rant, Matalas broke the hearts of Picard-loving enthusiasts around the world by driving home the point that the show’s third season will be its last, with no planned follow-up or spinoff in the works.
In his interview, Matalas made it abundantly clear that Star Trek: Legacy was, as he put it, “just a pie-in-the-sky” pipedream on his part and even with members of the cast, including LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden, and Ashlei Sharpe backing him with their support, it doesn’t have permission to take off. While he says, “It would be amazing if one day they came to me and said they were interested,” Matalas drives home the point that today is not that day, and nothing of the sort is in the works. Keeping at least some hope alive, the Picard Season 3 showrunner says, “Stranger things have happened,” giving the spinoff’s closed door a cracked window.
While Star Trek: Legacy may be a distant dream currently off in the furthest reaches of Matalas’ imagination, there’s still a great chance that Paramount+ will see the light (and the dollar signs) and give the show a shot. The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard saw the return of several members from the beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation with a reunion that’s been decades in the making and the latest season also introduced audiences to Ed Speelers’ Jack Crusher, the son of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden). With this new character added to the ranks, there are even more stories to be told.
And Jack Crusher wasn’t the only child of a Next Generation character to be introduced through Picard as audiences also met Geordi La Forge’s (LeVar Burton) daughters Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) and Alandra La Forge (Mica Burton). With this new blood, Star Trek: Legacy could easily put a fresh spin on the stories we know and love by introducing a literal next generation. Meanwhile, the series could also bring back classics like the aforementioned Beverly Crusher, Jean-Luc Picard, and Geordi La Forge, as well as William Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Data/Lore/Altan Inigo Soong (Brent Spiner), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), and Worf (Michael Dorn).
Outside of Star Trek: Picard, Paramount+ has launched fans into the extended universe of the Gene Roddenberry-created franchise by bringing them hits like Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks. With all of these titles expected to return for more seasons, Picard fans can only hope that the streaming service will see the writing on the wall and make Star Trek: Legacy a thing.
With Star Trek: Picard gearing up for its final episode on April 20, fans will, at least for now, need to prepare themselves for one last adventure with their long-time friends. But, as Matalas said, you never know what may happen in the future should Paramount+ decide to give Star Trek: Legacy a chance.
