Uniforms have always been one of the big parts of the fun with Star Trek. Each era of crew has its own unique look and style, but what makes a Star Trek uniform so unique from that of other sci-fi franchises is that even though they may differ, they all fit together to fill a certain franchise aesthetic. At their best Star Trek uniforms are functional, non-threatening (because the whole point of Starfleet is to send people out on a mission of peace), and instantly identifiable. Star Trek: Discovery, however, has decided to take the franchise’s uniforms in an entirely different direction. Now they’re using superhero-style leather.
Unlike most Star Trek shows, which settle on one look for the show and then stick with it, Paramount’s Star Trek: Discovery has already changed its uniform styles more times than I’m willing to attempt to count. There’s a good reason for that: Most of their uniforms have looked, well, uniformly bad. It’s not all bad though. The reveal of Star Trek’s first generic superhero leather uniform came with fourteen other pictures from the new season of Star Trek: Discovery. Among those is a photo of yet another new uniform and this one is actually kind of awesome. Here it is…
This more maroon uniform should immediately remind anyone who’s been watching Star Trek for more than five-minutes of the “monster maroon” uniforms worn by the original series crew during the last five of their six big screen adventures. Compare what Michael Burnham is wearing to William Shatner wearing the older version…
Nothing says “at attention Ensign!” quite like Admiral Kirk in a monster-maroon.
If you’re looking for more, below are the other thirteen images released by Star Trek: Discovery for your perusal. Amongst them you’ll find photos of other already previously revealed, terrible new uniforms, with the weird offset hemlines and a propensity to make everyone wearing them look like some kind of pillowcase….
