CBS is working on a plan to bring back Mulgrew as an older version of Kathryn Janeway.

Hot on the heels of news that Kate Mulgrew will voice Captain Janeway in the upcoming children’s animated series Star Trek: Prodigy comes this: Kate Mulgrew may also end up reprising the role of Janeway in a live-action Star Trek series.
Often accurate and ahead of the curve scooper Daniel Richtman says that CBS is working on a plan to bring back Mulgrew as an older version of Kathryn Janeway, in much the same way they’ve already done for Patrick Stewart with Star Trek: Picard. The rumored idea involves having her appear on Star Trek: Picard and then spinning her appearance off into its own show.
There’s only one problem with that idea: Very few people like or even watch Star Trek: Picard. CBS might be better off simply kicking off a totally separate and unrelated show rather than saddling it with all that Picard baggage.
The last time we saw Kathryn Janeway she was Admiral Janeway. That was for a brief cameo appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis. Whether she’s still a Vice-Admiral at Starfleet command or has retired by the time of Star Trek: Picard is unknown, but here’s hoping she’s still in Starfleet. We don’t need another show about some elderly person spending retirement dragged around the universe in a glorified cargo container so he sit in the background looking regal. Star Trek: Janeway does have a nice ring to it, though.
It seems that for now this is just an idea CBS is considering and nothing is set in stone yet. It’s not even certain whether Kate Mulgrew would be willing to play the character in live-action form, but given the fact that she’s voicing Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy I think the odds of her being up for the challenge are pretty good.
While Kate Mulgrew has always been very positive about the end result of the work she did on Star Trek: Voyager, the series was filmed during a pretty rough time in her life. It wasn’t easy the last time around, but it seems like her life is in a better place now and maybe she’d be able to actually enjoy being a part of the Star Trek universe at last.
An interesting note is that the team making Star Trek: Prodigy keeps referring to her as “Captain Janeway” instead of “Admiral Janeway”. That could mean that Star Trek: Prodigy is set before Star Trek: Nemesis and Kathryn’s promotion. Obviously Kate Mulgrew is now much too old to play younger Captain Janeway, so she’ll have to end up playing the character in the time of Star Trek: Picard. That probably means that whatever CBS comes up with for Mulgrew’s new Star Trek show, it’ll likely have no connection at all to her work on the animated Star Trek: Prodigy series.
