Kevin Feige Reveals Star Trek Inspired The Next Big Marvel Series
It might feel like the MCU has already locked in on the cast and crew that they want to rely on for the long-term, as evidenced by their recent announcement bringing back Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers for the next Avengers. However, Kevin Feige is apparently still on the lookout for fresh new talent to bring in. In fact, it was actually Feige being a fan of Star Trek: Picard that led to one of Marvel’s latest acquisitions. Terry Matalas has been announced as the showrunner for the upcoming Marvel series Vision, which will follow up on the events at the end of WandaVision.
Terry Matalas Is Joining The MCU
Fans of Star Trek will recognize that name as the man behind Star Trek: Picard, and it turns out Marvel’s Kevin Feige is a huge fan of that show. In fact, he was so impressed by the third season of Picard that Feige decided he had to have Matalas on board for a project with Marvel.
“That’s how I got to know him,” Feige said of how he became familiar with Matalas’ ability. “It was from his amazing [work on] Picard Season 3. I said: This is incredible. I don’t know how this exists. Let me find the person who made this.” And from there, Matalas was obviously quite enthusiastic to be able to add going from Star Trek to Marvel onto his resume.
The Success Of Picard
Kevin Feige is not the only one who has been left highly impressed by the latest season of Picard. It has had strong ratings, won an Astra Award for best writing, and won four Saturn awards, including Best Actor for Patrick Stewart and Best Sci-Fi TV Series. So, when checking out hot prospects in the industry, it is understandable why Star Trek would be on the radar of people at Marvel right now.
Bringing Marvel’s Sci-Fi Corner To The Forefront
Terry Matalas seems to have a knack for the sci-fi genre in general, as he also worked on the praised 12 Monkeys TV series. With Vision being one of the most futuristic characters in the MCU, it makes sense that Matalas’ skill set could come into play. While it is unlikely any Star Trek cameos or references will be slipping into Marvel, Matalas’ background in dealing with high-tech concepts could certainly be a benefit for the Vision TV series.
Bringing In Genre Specialists
Fans always enjoy it when the MCU branches out and introduces new styles into its properties. One of the elements praised about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was director Sam Raimi’s inclusion of some touches of his background in horror movies into the story. Matalas’ style on properties like Star Trek should help shake up criticisms against Marvel shows and movies having a set formula that they follow.
More WandaVision Spin-Offs Coming
It will still be some time before Vision comes to Disney+, as first up along the way after WandaVision is Agatha All Along. Fans will still have to wait a while for Vision as we know it will not be coming until some point in the year 2026. So, Star Trek’s Terry Matalas has some time to let the anticipation of what he can bring to the Marvel universe build. But if it is anything like what the third season of Picard achieved, it should be something special.
